made state fossil
it was made the state fossil in 1965
the petosky stone was an all natural substance the was create over a long period of time. i consists off small animals and minerals.

About 350 million years ago when most of Michigan was submerged under water. The name of the stone is from the place where it can be found in large Amounts - Petoskey Michigan. This is a place where the rock containing the fossil has been exposed to the surface in large quantities, and will be found along with limestone, shale and other fossils of different corals and bivalves.
