(1931)

This is the first “talkie” horror film of its kind. Frankenstein was released in 1931, and was based on the novel of the same title by Mary Shelley. The story begins with the main character, Henry Frankenstein, and his assistant Fritz searching through the country side for dead bodies with useable parts. Specifically, the film shows the two removing a hanged man from a tree and Henry is enraged because his neck was broken and the brain is useless. Eventually, Fritz is sent to a laboratory to retrieve a functional brain, but a sudden thunder strike startles him and he retrieves an abnormal, criminal brain. Needless to say, this does not work out well in the body of an 8 foot monster.

After the initial excitement, witnessed by Henry’s fiancée Elizabeth and best friend (and apparently rival lover) Victor, of the monster’s thunderous life-giving, the luck of poor Frankenstein goes downhill. The monster becomes violent and angry, and receives a similar reaction from those around him. He kills Fritz and Frankenstein’s mentor Doctor Waldman, and breaks free, roaming the countryside. All the while, the monster is pursued by angry villagers. It is in his wanderings that the human side of the monster as well as the monster side of the humans, is seen.

After Henry and Elizabeth’s joyous weeding day is interrupted by the monster, the villagers chase the monster into a windmill tower. He drags and unconscious Henry up the stairs and apparently throws him through the window, and the villagers et the tower on fire. Thus ends the movie.
