Gun Emplacement #2 (SMD/50/3)

Gun Emplacement Two

This sturdy structure was built in 1942 to Public Works Department Plan Number 114477, which I believe is a variation of the Colchester design from Great Britian.

The Gun Emplacement is 16.95 metres above mean sea level, and contains 118 cubic metres, approximately 271.4 tonnes, of concrete and 5.4 tonnes of reinforcing steel. Steel rods of 15.8 mm diameter are placed every 30.480 cm, and tied together with number seven wire.

It housed one of two six inch, (15.24cm), Breach Loading, wire, Mark VII, Naval Guns, and was first occupied on 3 November 1942 when gun number 1506 was mounted. The gun was dismounted by Captain Kerr (Range Officer) on 18 February 1945.

During the 1970s the present land owners built a water tank on top of this structure, an action which showed little regard for the respect these defenders of Timaru deserved.
