In 2001, a group of eight strong mujeres felt the need for a Chicana/Latina organization that provided support and guidance with Chicana/Latina issues on the UC Santa Cruz campus. They felt this need would be fullfilled in a sorority such as Sigma Pi Alpha Inc. In Spring 2002 Sigma Pi Alpha's Gamma Chapter was established.
