Ambitions
Ch 19

Alexis looked stunned. “Tropical? As in warm? As in sunny and beautiful with a beaches? Will my gorgeous husband be wearing next to nothing?” Suddenly playing hooky to celebrate with Jax seemed like the best idea she had heard in weeks.

“If I can see you, the beautiful woman I married, in a very slinky two piece.” Jax grinned broadly. Convincing Alexis to do anything when she was working on a case was close to impossible. Her schedule allowed them little private time. This weekend was just what the doctor ordered.

“You are the one who packed. If you packed one I will wear it.” Alexis eyed him suspiciously as the plane backed away from the gate.

Jax laughed heartily. “I am sure I packed something that will do.” He worked hard to make sure that everything in her bag was adequately revealing.

“I never doubted that.” She glared at him playfully. “Did you pack anything else?”

Jax tried to look shocked about the question. “Are you accusing me of only packing the things I want to see you in?” Jax asked with mock indignation.

“That is exactly what I am doing, Jasper.” Alexis tried to sound serious. “Am I correct in my assumptions?”

“You know me so well.” He smirked.

Jason and Carly exchanged heartbroken looks. Michael loved AJ so much. The pain they saw in their son’s eyes killed them.

Michael couldn’t stop a tear from falling from his eyes. “Can we make him better? Can we?” He hated thinking his Daddy was sick. “Please!” He pleaded.

Carly never failed to marvel at her son’s heart. She had no idea how to answer him. “Daddy has to make himself better.” Carly tried to explain.

“You mean he has to take his medicine?” Michael tried to figure out what his mommy meant. Grownups were hard to understand.

Jason knelt to look Michael in the eye. “There is no medicine to make him better.” Jason explained.

”B….bbb…bbbbut…. “ Michael stuttered as he tried to stop the tears that were flowing freely from his eyes. “If there is no medicine how can he get better? Will he be sick forever? “ He worried about missing his daddy.

Carly took Michael in her arms. “Your daddy can get better. He just has to decide he wants to get better.”

”Of course he wants to!” Michael yelled. “If he doesn’t get better, he has to stay in jail. He can’t be with me if he is in there..” He could barely breath trough his anguished sobs. “Doesn’t he love me?”

Laura motioned for Lucy to hold on as she placed her call to Luke. “Pick up.” She willed out loud as the phone rang in her ear. Finally, Luke picked up his phone “Hey it’s me. Do you have Lulu?” Laura asked before Luke could say anything.

“Of course I have the Princess. I wouldn’t leave my baby girl all alone.” Luke answered indignantly. Just because Laura had fallen down on her parental duties it didn’t mean he had.

Laura breathed a deep sigh of relief. “Thank god. She is safe with you.” With one son gone and Nikolas in the hospital she worried about her youngest.

“Always.” Luke agreed. “What happened to you? You were supposed to pick her up last night. Collins hasn’t seen you. Now, Baldwin seems to think he has some claim. Want to tell me what is going on?” Luke asked curiously.

Laura sighed. She couldn’t avoid them forever but she wasn’t ready to see them yet. “Nikolas was in an accident. I have been in the hospital with him all night.” Laura tried to convince herself she wasn’t lying. All of that was true. She just didn’t mention her pregnancy.

“And Baldwin cares because?” Luke asked curiously. “Laura, you were done with him twenty years ago. You don’t want to go there again.”

“I can take care of myself, Luke.” Laura admonished. She didn’t need advice from him. “You will keep Lulu until Nikolas is out of danger?”

“Of course.” He never missed a chance to see his only daughter. “Should I send the Shrink and the Ex your way?”

Before Laura could answer Scott grabbed the phone away from Luke. “Where are you, Laura!” Scott demanded rather than asked.

Hearing his angry voice Laura realized she did not have the energy to deal with him. “Tell Luke I’ll call.” She said before hanging up.

Scott groaned as he heard the tell tale click. “She hung up on me.” He announced indignantly to Luke’s great delight.

”Maybe she has some taste after all.” He said as he noticed Scott dialing *69 into his phone. “My phone, my options.” He growled as he grabbed the phone. “I am going to have breakfast with my daughter.” Luke grinned and walked into Kelly’s.

---
Lucy watched Laura’s end of the phone exchange curiously. “Did you say Kevin AND Scott?” She asked anxiously as soon as Laura had hung up the phone. She wondered if maybe all the excitement had driven her to hearing things.

Laura nodded. “Both of them.” She hoped Lucy could help. If anybody understood, it had to be Lucy.

“I thought I was the only one insane enough to get into that little predicament. You and Doc seemed so solid. How did Scotty worm his way into the mix?” Lucy tried to sort the situation out. “He can be hard to resist.” Lucy remembered before Laura had a chance to respond.

“Something like that.” Laura sighed. It didn’t matter to her how it had happened, all that mattered was that it had. Now she had to fix it. “What should I do?”

---
Stefan opened the door for his wife. “What is it Barbara? You seem upset.” He hated thinking that maybe all of the problems with Nikolas were causing Bobbie any undue stress.

“I think maybe we should dissolve or marriage vows before anybody really finds out about them.” Bobbie said nervously looking down at the floor. She hated the idea of ending it with Stefan. They worked so hard to resume their relationship.

“Excuse me Barbara, lack of sleep must be affecting my hearing. I thought you said you wanted a divorce.” Surely she couldn’t mean that.

“It is for the best.” Why did he have to ague? Couldn’t he see how hard it was for her?

”Look at me.” Stefan demanded. Bobbie always said exactly what she meant. It wasn’t like her to stare at the floor during a confrontation.

Bobbie blinked away the tears in her eyes before facing Stefan. “Please do not push me. I am doing this for you.” The pain and publicity generated by looking for Carly’s father could only hurt Stefan. She couldn’t expose him to that.

“I do not see how leaving me will help me. I love you, Barbara. I do not want to end our marriage. Tell me what is wrong?” He asked with the soft smile that Bobbie always responded to.

“To save Sarah we have to find Carly’s biological father.” Tears began to flow down Bobbie’s face as she spoke.

Stefan stepped towards his wife and brought her into his arms. “Thinking of that must bring back some horrible memories.” He tried to sooth her. “Are you prepared to face those?” He would not consent to letting her search if it would hurt her more.

“My granddaughter needs it.” She sobbed. “I have to be prepared.’ It wasn’t the memories she feared. “The publicity, the stares, the people who will come out of the woodwork… All of that I can handle. I have faced it all before.” She assured him as she broke away. “I can not ask you to do the same.”

---
Emily nervously reached Nikolas’ bedside. “I am so sorry.” She whispered as she took his hand. “How can I ask you to forgive me? All of it is my fault. If I had a car, if I hadn’t called you, if AJ wasn’t a drunk, if…. “ Emily sobbed as she thought of all the ways she had contributed to Nikolas’ accident.

“I came to apologize and offer moral support.” She paused and considered her satement. “Who am I kidding? You don’t want to see me. I only cause you trouble. Oh Nikolas, please be okay. I don’t know how to live with myself if you are not. I don’t know what I would do. You need to wake up. If you wake up, I will leave you alone forever.”

Knowing that she couldn’t possibly help Nikolas, Emily let go of his hand and started to leave. “Bye Nik.” She whispered before turning to go.

-- Eve and Sonny looked back and forth from one another. Each had questions. Neither wanted to be the first to ask. “Good to go.” Both lied simultaneously.

Jerry and V exchanged knowing glances from the front seat. Nobody was that prepared for their first mission. “Where do we land? What is the first stop? How do we keep covered? What is the schedule for the guards?” Jerry shot off basic questions about the specifics of the mission. If they knew everything, they would pass the quiz. If they did not, at least he knew before it was too late. He would not fail because his help was too proud to admit a lack of knowledge. “That boy’s life hangs in the balance. Are you sure you know what to do?” He asked as he ditched the car in long-term parking.

Faced with questions they could not answer, Eve and Sonny opened up and began asking questions. They went over every detail of the mission twice before they boarded the plane that would take them to the remote island where Lucky Spencer was being held.

---
He felt cold, groggy, hungry and weak. All he wanted was sleep. Sleeping was the only thing that made his headaches go away. “They must be drugging me.” He thought. Resolving once again to discontinue eating, he tried to clear his head. How long had he been unconscious this time? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? He had no way of telling. Every time he woke up he found himself in this small room, alone. The sparse room held only a bed, a desk, and a chessboard. He could see nothing from the windows except his guards diligently waiting for him to attempt an escape.
