Chapter 6

Josie walked into the house as quietly as possible. Ben and Nathan were still in the car trying to sort out all their surfing gear. Josie couldn't help to have felt a little disappointed that Ben was leaving for "Practice", but she felt better when he had called his friends and they had told him it was canceled. Tiptoeing towards the stairs, Josie was almost in the clear when Jillian came walking out of the Kitchen.

"Oh, Josie. Hello." Jillian smiled as Josie managed a short 'hi' and tried to continue walking. "How was surfing? Oh my, look at your back!" Jillian cried as she reached her arm out to her.

"Don't touch me!" Josie recoiled as the front door opened and Ben and Nathan stalked in.

"Josie, I'm just trying to help." Jillian said, backing off slightly.

"Yeah?" Josie asked in anger. "Well, I don't want your help," Jillian sighed, rubbing her temples slowly as Ben and Nathan watched, bemused by the whole scene before them.

"Look. Josie, I'm gonna be your mother soon, and..." Jillian started as Josie cut her off icily.

"You will never be my mother. You can marry my father, and it won't mean a thing." Josie cried, tears forming in her eyes. Trying to save what little dignity she had left, Josie turned on her heels and ran up stairs as fast as she could.

Slamming her bedroom door behind her, Josie's tough exterior dissolved as she slumped against the door and sobbed. How could Jillian even begin to think that she was anything like her mother? If she was 100 times the woman she was, Jillian would never even be close to being her mother.

"Josie...hey?" Ben knocked softly on the door. "I know I'm not one of your favorite people right now, but do you mind if I come in?" He asked UN-surely. Pausing for a few seconds, he was about to turn away as he heard the lock click open. Pushing the door open, Ben stepped in cautiously. Closing the door, he sighed heavily as he watched Josie's shaking form.

"How could she say that Ben? How could she say she was anything close to being my mother?" Josie asked, lifting her tear stained face to meet his gaze.

Slowly walking towards her, he sat down in front of her and sighed. "Look Jo...sie ... um, look, I don't know what happened to your Mum, so I can't understand where you're coming from. But I do know that Jillian is a great woman. Nathan loves her, and she's always been great to me. I also know that you're a genuily nice person." Ben smiled as Josie gave him a short laugh.

"Yeah, Nice." She said shortly, looking up at him again. "I've done everything I could to be mean to you," He grinned at her.

"I know, but you're so damn sexy." He laughed as she did as well. "See, I got you to smile. Look Josie, I'm bad at this. I've never been the person to be calm and thoughtful or like just one girl. But you're amazing. I've only known you now for two days and it's been so much fun getting to spend time with you."

"What are you trying to say?" Josie asked quietly as Ben rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

"Look, just give Jillian a chance? For me?" Ben urged as she sighed in disappointment.

"Alright." She whispered. "For you."

"Great, then I'll see you downstairs." He said quickly, leaving the room before he could embarrass himself anymore.
