The first type of Transformer to be released were generation 1 the first of these being released in 1984 These included Optimus Prime,

Megatron

and Starscream. Later releases included Jazz, Soundwave, Sideswipe and Dirge. By 1985 batch of Transformers called Triple Changers had been released. The Triple Changers transformed from robot into 2 different types of vehicles. There were 3 Decepticons called Blitzwing (robot, tank and jet), Astrotrain (robot, space shuttle and train) and Octane (robot, fuel tanker and plane) .

The other 3 Triple Changers were the Autobots Broadside (robot, aircraft carrier and plane) Sandstorm (robot, dune buggy and helicopter) and Springer (robot, future car and future helicopter).

Another Group of Transformers that were released in 1985 were the Constructicons these consisted of Bonecrusher, Hook, Long haul, Scrapper, Scavenger and Mixmaster. These 6 Transformers were different from others before them, in so much as that in addition to being able to transform they could also combine to form Devastator.

One other group of Transformers that saw it's release in 1985 was the Insecticons, this group consisted of Shrapnel, Kickback and Bombshell.

In addition to these 3 Insecticons 4 others called the delux insecticons were released these were called Chop Shop, Barrage Venom and Ransack.

Another rare 1985 release was Shockwave who transformed from a space laser gun to robot

By 1986 we saw the release of 2 of the biggest Transformers Metroplex

These Transformers were known as base Transformers. they changed from robot to large base playset. Of these 2 Transformers Trypticon is the rarest and is very difficult to find with all it's parts and with it's motorized action still working.
