Community Service Projects

Dictionary Project
Click Here to View Project Photos	About ten years ago a lady in Charleston SC sent a letter to a member of our club begging for assistance in delivering dictionaries to third graders in our county. The club accepted the challenge but decided to deliver the dictionaries not only to Hampton County but to Allendale County since there was not a Rotary Club in that County. It was further decided to share the distribution for Barnwell and Bamberg Counties. The Rotary Club of Barnwell assumed the delivery of Dictionaries in Barnwell and Bamberg except for the third graders in Ehrhardt. This would be included in the deliveries made by the Rotary Club of Hampton County. After a couple years, our club started receiving the yearly supply of dictionaries from the Original South Carolina Dictionary Lady, Mrs. Bonnie Beeferman, of Hilton Head Island. This change allowed the club to deliver dictionaries to ALL third graders, in both public and private schools, since the first deliveries were limited to only public schools. Mrs. Bonnie had been providing dictionaries for Beaufort and Jasper Counties with the help of donations from local sponsors and a yearly Christmas card sale she conducted. Today she supplies the dictionaries for Colleton, Hampton, Beaufort, Jasper, Allendale, Barnwell and Bamberg Counties. Since adopting the Dictionary Project, members of The Rotary Club of Hampton County have, on a yearly basis, personally gone into the schools and delivered between 450 and 500 dictionaries to the third grade students. Our yearly supply of dictionaries is purchased from Mrs. Bonnie with money received from our fund raising projects. The dictionaries normally cost $1 each. If you would like to help sponsor this local community project please contact one of the Rotarians. Remember if a third grader in Hampton and Allendale counties and Ehrhardt has a dictionary, it was probably delivered by The Rotary Club of Hampton County.

Baseball Camp
Click Here to View Photos	Baseball Camp is for kids, seven to fourteen years of age. Between 50 and 70 kids participate each year.
