Masquerade Chapter 22-23

 Chapter 22
Brenda is the first to break their gaze, she has to before she completely melts. Sonny is quiet for a few seconds, trying to pick his words carefully. Finally he comes to the conclusion that it isn’t going to happen. The words are not going to come, and even if he could find the right thing to say, it wouldn’t be enough.

Sonny: I can’t do this, not here. Come on!

He takes her hand and leads her down the hall. Carly watches them go with more than mild interest.

Carly: Oh my god! Jace, he is in love with her?
Jason: Who?
Carly: Sonny, he is in love with Brenda!
Jason: What makes you say that?
Carly: Just look at him he is following her like a puppy drooling over a………..
Jason: Carly!
Carly: What? It’s true
Jason: So, what is your point?
Carly: I’m right, then you admit that I’m right.
Jason: Sonny loves Brenda, so what?
Carly: No, I love money, it’s not the same. Sonny is in love with Brenda, head over heels, I’d say.
Jason: What difference does that make?
Carly: You told me that he asked Hannah to marry him?
Jason: That’s right.
Carly: But he doesn’t care about Hannah as much as he cares about Brenda.
Jason: You’ve only seen him with Brenda for 10 minutes and you can tell the depth of there love?
Carly: He doesn’t look at Hannah the way he was looking at Brenda just now.
Jason: I know, you said he was looking at her like she was a bitch in heat.
Carly: I didn’t say that.
Jason: Because I stopped you from saying it?
Carly: Because it was mean and it wasn’t even what I meant, I was just envious.
Jason: Okay, tell me, why were you envious?
Carly: Because he looks at Brenda like she is the most precious person in the world to him.
Jason: You want Sonny to look at you like that?

He gives her a mischievous grin and she hits him playfully in the arm.

Carly: Of course not silly, but it wouldn’t hurt you to look at me like that, occasional.
Jason: Carly, I love you, I adore you, next to Michael, there is no one I love more than you.
Carly: I know you do. I just think it is kind of sweet the way that Sonny looks at Brenda
Jason: I told you he loves her, I don’t know why, but Sonny is in love with Brenda.
Carly: Does Brenda love him the as much as he loves her?
Jason: I don’t think that loving each other is a contest to Sonny and Brenda.
Carly: You know what I mean.
Jason: There was a time when I didn’t really think Brenda knew how to love or take care of Sonny.
Carly: What about now?
Jason: She took care of him tonight, she covered for him, no questions asked.
Carly: No kidding?
Jason: It really surprised me, but for once she knew what needed to be done.
Carly: God, Jace! Sonny can’t marry Hannah, not if he is in love with another woman.
Jason: I told him the same thing, he won’t listen.
Carly: When does Sonny listen?
Jason: Sometimes he listens to me.
Carly: Maybe about business. You have to keep trying to get through to him, about Brenda.
Jason: Yeah, but in this case, seems to think that he can ignore what he feels for Brenda
Carly: It doesn’t take a genius to realize that things are heating up between them.
Jason: Things are always heated between Sonny and Brenda, right now they are at critical.
Carly:It is worse than that, something is about to explode.

In the examining Ned has helped Lois finish dressing and then helped her to stand up from the examining table.

Ned: Are you sure that they only needed to get the results of one more test?
Lois: Yes, the doctor even told me I can wait outside, but the test is kind of private.
Ned: Do you want me to leave?
Lois: Of course not, but I just don’t want to share it with everybody else, unless we have to.
Ned: Is it serious?
Lois: *Nervious* It could be or it might be a false alarm.

She was beginning to worry Ned.

Ned: Lois Marie, you tell me this instant!
Lois: I think I might be pregnant again.
Ned: How long has you thought this?
Lois: I’ve noticed the signs for a couple of weeks.
Ned: Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner?
Lois: I wanted to be sure, but I’ve been to busy to go to the doctor.
Ned: Who have you told?
Lois: Just Ma, nobody else knows we are together, not even Brenda.
Ned: We are probably going to have to explain this to people, I think we should tell Brenda.
Lois: I guess so, she has been trying so hard to make me realize that you and I belong together.
Ned: She is beating a dead horse, because I am hopelessly in love with you.
Lois: And I’m hopelessly devoted to you.

                      They kiss tenderly.

Ned: Wow! I can’t believe that we might have another baby. Can my life get any better?
Lois: I think that we should wait until we get the test results, then we can get excited.
Ned: What is taking the doctor so long?
Lois: I guess they want to make sure. If I’m pregnant, I don’t want to tell Sonny right away, though.
Ned: I want to tell everybody! Why should we leave Sonny out of the loop?
Lois: When I was carrying Brooke was when Lily was pregnant, then she and their child died.
Ned: You can’t protect Sonny from reality, Lois. He is going to find out in the end.
Lois: I know, but I want to try and spare him as much pain as possible.
Ned: I think that Sonny would be happy for us.
Lois: He would be, but he would be unhappy at the same time.

Ned links his hand with hers and then kisses hers tenderly.

Ned: I hope Corinthos realizes how lucky he is to have you for a friend.
Lois: Sonny is my brother Ned, just as much as Louie or Mark. I would do anything to protect them.

What Lois doesn’t know it that Sonny does need protecting, but it is an over powering task, because the threat is disguised as his devoted fiancée, Hannah Scott, who is at the moment hatching a heart breaking scheme to hold on to her man. If Sonny knew the truth about his occasional lover, it would not only break his heart, it would completely change his view of reality. In her room in Switzerland, Lopez hands Hannah a file.

Lopez: Everything that you need to fake a pregnancy.

Hannah gives him a sad look.

Hannah: Everything, except the baby.
Lopez: We have a few months before we have to worry about the baby. You’ll have to trust me on that.
Hannah: I do trust you, Lopez. I know I wouldn’t have gotten this far without you.
Lopez: You probably would never even survived basic training without my help.
Hannah: *Smiling* Probably not, I do owe you a lot though.

Lopez: You would have handled most of it on your own, you are a survivor.
Hannah: I’ve had to be a survivor.
Lopez: Your father would be proud.

Hannah gives her mentor a look of pure venom.

Hannah: I never wanted my father’s approval. Hernando Rivera was a monster!
Lopez: Never the less, you were his only child and he loved you.
Hannah: Then why did he do this to me!
Lopez: Do what, Querida?
Hannah: My father took away my chance of giving the man I love a natural child.
Lopez: Surely you don’t blame your father for something natural?
Hannah: Is it natural to sterilize a 14 year old girl?
Lopez: I don’t understand, why would your father do something so malicious?
Hannah: To teach me a lesson or to punish me, I’m not sure which.
Lopez: What could you have done that was so horrible?
Hannah: I brought shame on my father’s house when, at age 14, I had a son.
Lopez: You’re father was so ashamed that he took measures to prevent another pregnancy?
Hannah: Yes, but in doing so he eliminated the possibility of an heir to his empire.
Lopez: Forgive me if I’m being insensitive with my next question.
Hannah: You could never be insensitive, but I think I know what you are about to ask.
Lopez: When the Agency faked your death, I read the newspaper accounts.
Hannah: I memorized every account of my death.
Lopez: Was that pregnancy a lie?
Hannah: No, it was a mistake. The doctor made a mistake, but I didn’t know until later.
Lopez: That must have been hard.
Hannah: I thought that child was a miracle. All I have ever wanted was to have Sonny’s child.
Lopez: You will, it might not be a natural child, but he will never know.
Hannah: He can never know the truth about me or this child.
At the moment, Sonny is to busy thinking about his own
truths, the ones that he feels in his heart, to worry about
anything else. He leads Brenda to a small room off of the
main hall. It was a private consulting room, one of the places
that doctors take people when they want to give them really
bad news. It was comfortably decorated with soft couches
and chairs all in soothing blues and grays. It smelled faintly of
lilacs and there might have been music playing in the
background. However, Brenda were really aware of the
surroundings. Brenda could sense that something was about
to happen, the way that he was looking at her was too
intense to ignore, it was almost as if he was electrically
charged. He was focused completely on her and why he had
brought her there, something had been building inside him
ever since she had come back. He had tried to ignore it
without success, he loved her, but it was more than that. It
even went beyond the fact that he wanted her, he needed
her as well. He was tired of denying it, he wanted her to
                      know the truth.

Brenda: Why are we here, Sonny?
Sonny: Because, there is something I need to do and I didn’t want an audience.

Sonny is giving her such an intense look and has moved so
close to Brenda that it is affecting her physically to the point
that she has to remind herself to breath. He reaches up and
caresses her face with a touch that is so light and soft that
she can’t help but close her eyes and melt into his touch.

Sonny: You’re beautiful, Brenda.
Brenda: *Disappointed* You brought me in here to tell me that?
Sonny: *Smiling* Not exactly.

For some reason, Sonny suddenly feels extremely nervous,
he is about to lay it all on the line, expose his true feelings to
Brenda. Sharing his feelings has never been one of his
favorite things, even when it came to Brenda. He takes one
hand and tilts her face up, she opens her eyes to meet his in
                      an intensely sensual gaze.

Brenda: Not that I mind being told that I’m beautiful.
Sonny: It is the truth, and it bares repeating, you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.

He cups her face between his hands and slowly draws her
                      closer to him.

Brenda: Sonny, I don’t think we should be doing this, generating these burning feelings.
Sonny: The feelings are there, Brenda, we don’t go out of our way to create them.
Brenda: True, but we don’t have to respond to them, either.
Sonny: I can’t continue to ignore them.

They are so close now, that they can almost feel the heart beat of the other person.

Brenda: Maybe we should talk.
Sonny: There aren’t words to express how I feel. I need to show you.

He gently pulls her to him and showers her with tender, yet
enthusiastic kisses. Like rain hitting warm pavement, Brenda
isn’t sure where one ends and the next one begins. He takes
his time, as if they had an eternity. She has never been
kissed this way, not even by Sonny. She finally gives up on
trying to resist the feelings that are bombarding her and
kisses him back with earnest desire, letting him have
complete control as he presses her body against the wall.
The short bursts of passion she is experiencing are not
particularly breath stealing. Never the less, Brenda feels light
headed, giddy, almost as if she were floating. He runs his
hands though her hair and down her back, finally wrapping
them around her waist and pulling her tightly against his body
until no space exists between the,. A wave of pure
stimulating pleasure runs through her body as her and Sonny
continue their sensual kiss. They break away, minutes later,
or maybe it was several hours. Both Sonny and Brenda have
lost all track of time. Brenda is desperate to compose
herself, and regain control of her feelings. However, she is
aware that she feels wonderfully wiped out by what has just
happened. Sonny feels much the same way, if a person
could become drunk on life, he is convinced that it must feel
something like what he is experiencing. Brenda finds that it is
nearly impossible for her to stand up, so she sits down on
the couch. Then she looks up at him with those beautiful
brown eyes, the ones he always knew saw right to his soul,
and begs for an explanation. He sits down beside her and
takes her hand in his. Even after the most amazing kiss of her
life, Brenda was able to find pleasure in this simple gesture.
However, she was still confused about what the kiss meant.
She almost didn’t dare to hope that it meant the same thing
to Sonny as it meant to her.

Sonny: I love you Brenda, that is why I told Taggert I’d moved on so he would leave you alone.
Brenda: I know you care about me.
Sonny: I do care about you Brenda.
Brenda: I know that you take care of your friends, until someone you care about betrays you.
Sonny: Is this an old betrayal you are worried about, or something new.
Brenda: I’m just thinking, out loud that is all.

For some reason, Brenda had suddenly thought about
searching Hannah’s room and the pictures she had found.
Pictures of Sonny and Jason and Luke’s strange partner,
Kriege. For the first time in several days, it occurred to
Brenda that maybe she wasn’t the only one keeping secrets
                      from Sonny.

Sonny: It’s true, if you are my friend I take care of you, but I’m talking about more than that.
Brenda: You love me, that is enough.
Sonny: No it isn’t.

He runs his hands though his hair in frustration. This was proving to be more difficult than he had imagined.

Sonny: I thought that I could convey my feelings in that kiss.
Brenda: It was just a kiss, Sonny.

He gives her a skeptical look.

Sonny: Has there ever been a kiss between us that was ''just a kiss.''?
Brenda: You’re right, that kiss between us is a personification of passion reborn.
Sonny: But it didn’t say what I need to say. I’m in love with you, baby.
Brenda: You mean, that you love me, like you love Robin, Jason and Mike.
Sonny: No, I’m hopelessly head over in love with you.

He waits for her reaction, but she just looks at him with near
fear in her eyes. It was not the reaction he was looking for,
but at least she had bolted from the room. It was partially
because she was in shock, but partially because she wanted
to hear what he had to say. A large part of her heart had
ached for so long to hear Sonny profess his love to her.

Sonny: I’m talking about the way that I love my soul mate, my heart mate, my destiny.
Brenda: Oh, I need to go check on Lois.
Sonny: Not a reaction I pictured when I imagined proclaiming my feelings to the love of my life
Brenda: Don’t call me the love of your life!
Sonny: Okay, but it will still be true. You are the woman my heart beats for Brenda.
Brenda: I need to go find Lois.

She runs from the room, leaving Sonny alone and feeling
completely vulnerable. Exhausted from his proclamation of
devotion, all he can do is watch her leave the room, taking
his heart with her. His worst fear had come true, he had scared
Brenda or confused her or just plain made her mad. He could have
kicked himself for not waiting, instead, he hits the door.

                      Sonny: Damn!

That only makes his hand hurt, as much as his heart is aching
he doesn’t need anymore pain, so he goes after Brenda. Out
in the hall, he finds no trace of Brenda, it almost seems that
she has disappeared. In another hall, Brenda leans against
the wall, half hoping Sonny won’t find her, but half hoping he
will. Knowing that someone as amazing as Sonny is in love
with her has left her emotions balanced between flustered,
and euphoric, elated, yet scared of what comes next. Chapter 23
Brenda didn’t really know how it happened, but she and Lois had both ended up in the guest bedroom of Jason’s penthouse. She had been talking to Lois and Ned, and trying to hide from Sonny, when Carly showed up demanding Ned’s full attention. Never mind the fact that he obviously wanted to be with Lois, Carly insisted that Ned had to meet with Edward right away. Fortunately, Lois was ready to go home anyway. She had been waiting on the results of her pregnancy test, but the lab was backed up until the morning. In a moment of madness, Ned had left Brooke Lynne in Carly’s care when he left for the hospital. Carly in turn had brought Brooke and Michael to the penthouse, believing it was much safer than mansion or the gate house. That was how Lois ended up at the penthouse, Brenda had just come along for the ride. It was the last place on earth she ever expected to spend the night, but then again the whole evening had been anything except normal. Being attacked by some crazed cult member and then being questioned by Taggert was bad enough. Then Sonny had to go and make things even more complicated by telling her he was in love with her. Brenda tossed and turned for several hours before finally giving up on sleeping and climbing out of bed. Across the hall, Sonny wasn’t sleeping much better. Sonny wasn’t a very positive person, if there was any possibility that he could put a negative spin on something he was more than willing. He was convinced that he had messed up any chance that he had with Brenda by moving too fast. He could feel her tension, even though she was across the hall. He knew that she wasn’t sleeping well, which made it impossible for him to rest. He throws his robe on and stands at his bedroom window looking up at the stars, which is where Jason finds him.

Jason: Sonny?

Sonny seems to be lost in thought and Jason doesn’t want to interrupt. However, it is somewhat important that he speaks with his friend. Jason isn’t sure that Sonny heard him, so he moves a little closer. In actuality, he felt Jason even before he spoke. Jason and Brenda are the only people that Sonny can feel instinctively the minute they walk into the room. Of course, his senses are much stronger when it comes to Brenda. He can feel her even when their is a wall or a door or even several feet or miles between them. Jason is close enough to touch Sonny now, which causes Sonny to look up at his friend. Jason looks tired and Sonny knows instantly that he hasn’t been home in hours.

Sonny: Have you been out working?
Jason: Someone has to keep an eye on Moreno and make sure he doesn’t retaliate.

That was what they were afraid of, that Moreno would strike back because they dumped the body on his territory. They weren’t even supposed to be on Moreno’s turf at all, much less dumping their problems.

Sonny: So what have you found out?
Jason: Everything is cool for now.
Sonny: That’s good, I don’t want to take any chances though, neither of us can afford mistakes.
Jason: I know, but things seem to be quiet for tonight.
Sonny: You should go on home and get some rest.
Jason: If is all the same to you, I think I’ll just crash on your couch.
Sonny: Does Carly have you in the dog house?
Jason: What does that mean, exactly?
Sonny: Did you and Carly have a fight?
Jason: We don’t really fight, but my penthouse is a little crowded right now.
Sonny: Sorry about that, but I thought that Lois and Brenda would be safer here than at the gate house.
Jason: I think so too, but with all those women over there I kind of feel outnumbered.

Sonny gives his friend a sympathetic smile
Sonny: I understand, but sometimes it is worth that feeling, to have those you love close by.

Across the hall, Brenda is sitting on the edge of the bed looking out her window at the same stars that Sonny was just watching. Across the hall Lois has been checking on her daughter. She walks past the bedroom where Brenda is staying and notices her friend is not asleep.

Lois: Bren, are you okay?
Brenda: Yeah. I’m just having trouble sleeping. What are you doing still up?
Lois: I heard Brooke cry out.
Brenda: I thought maybe you were worried about that test.
Lois: I told you, it is a routine test and you shouldn’t worry.
Brenda: You won’t tell me what it’s about though. That has me worried.
Lois: It isn’t serious, if it were they wouldn’t make me wait until morning for the results.
Brenda: I hope you’re right. What was wrong with Brooke?
Lois: She was having one of those falling dreams.
Brenda: Do not talk to me about falling, I live that dream daily.
Lois: I think Brooke dreams about falling of a cliff, not falling for Sonny Corinthos.
Brenda: Yeah, I just hope when Brooke Lynne falls in love, she doesn’t come to me for advice.
Lois: I figured that Sonny was what was causing your insomnia.
Brenda: Why would you think that?
Lois: You hardly said to words to him on the way over here
Brenda: He can be so infuriating!
Lois: Something happened at the hospital, didn’t it?
Brenda: He kissed me, Lo.
Lois: Is it the first time the two of you have kissed since you got back?
Brenda: Not like this kiss, Sonny has a lot of nerve kissing me and making me feel those feelings.
Lois: What feelings?
Brenda: The kiss we shared was so amazing, Sonny made me feel things I only feel for him.
Lois: You aren’t making a whole lot of sense. You are made at him for kissing you, Bren?
Brenda: There is more, he told me he is in love with me.

In Sonny’s bedroom. Jason gives him a shocked look.

Jason: You told Brenda that you are in love with her?
Sonny: Yes, after I kissed her tonight.
Jason: You sure move fast when you want something.
Sonny: I hardly call it moving fast, Brenda and I have waited a long time to be together.
Jason: Are you together? Because it doesn’t seem like you are together.
Sonny: I scared her and she ran.
Jason: That explains the injured hand, Brenda slammed the door in your face.
Sonny: You might say that , and I stopped it with my fist, but at least she knows how I feel.

Jason had wanted Sonny to go have his hand checked out by a doctor, but of course Sonny had refused.

Jason: Can I ask one question?
Sonny: Just one?
Jason: Yeah, this should cover everything. Have you lost your mind?
Sonny: No, for once I tried telling Brenda the truth, I’m in love with her.
Jason: You can’t tell her a truth like that.
Sonny: Wait a minute, you are the one who believes in total honesty.
Jason: Yeah, but sometimes honesty doesn’t work.
Sonny: Jason, did you tell Carly what happened tonight?
Jason: Of course, I tell Carly everything.
Sonny: That is the kind of relationship I want with Brenda, I want to tell her the truth.
Jason: It isn’t the same. I tell Carly because she will go digging on her own anyway.
Sonny: You tell Carly to protect her. I used to think you had to lie to protect people.
Jason: I only tell Carly what she can handle. Brenda can’t handle what you told her.
Sonny: What makes you so sure?
Jason: You are over here and Brenda is over there.
Sonny: You think I made a mistake, telling Brenda that I’m in love with her?
Jason: I think Brenda is going to expect it to mean something.
Sonny: It does mean something, I want her back in my life.
Jason: Are you sure that you don’t just want her?
Sonny: Yes, I want Brenda, but it goes way beyond a physical need or desire.
Jason: I don’t pretend to understand your relationship with Brenda.
Sonny: Sometimes I don’t even understand, but loving Brenda…….

He pauses to let out a sigh.

Sonny: Loving Brenda is sometimes the only thing that feels real or right in my life.
Jason: If you feel that strongly.
Sonny: I do, it is the strongest thing in my life.
Jason: Then you need to tell Brenda.
Sonny: I did and she ran off.
Jason: Keep letting her know, better yet keep showing her how much you care.
Sonny: I didn’t know that you were a one of Brenda’s fans?
Jason: I don’t know about Brenda, but, what if Carly had given up on me?
Sonny: You would be giving up Friday nights at Jake’s!
Jason: Among other things, but I really believe that you should go after Brenda.
Sonny: Okay, that is what I’m going to do, right now!
Jason: Woah! I didn’t mean right this minute.
Sonny: Why not? She is across the hall right now.
Jason: She might be asleep.
Sonny: Trust me she isn’t asleep, I can feel her right now and she isn’t sleeping.
Jason: You tried once tonight, maybe you should give her some time to decide what she wants.

Sonny looks at his watch

Sonny: She has had 4 hours, but she probably knew how she felt the minute she left the room.
Jason: Maybe so, but you still need to think about Hannah.
Sonny: Damn, you’re right. It isn’t fair to her if I pursue Brenda without breaking our engagement.

Back at Jason’s penthouse, Lois stands with her hands on her hips, slightly miffed at her friends indecisiveness.

Lois: Do you want Sonny or not?
Brenda: Of course I want him, anyone would have to be crazy not to want Sonny Corinthos.

Neither one of them notices that Carly has just walked by the open door in time to hear Brenda’s last statement.

Carly: You know, I used to think the exact same thing.
Brenda: You can’t possibly understand what we are talking about.
Carly: Oh really, because I used to have these amazingly detailed fantasies about Sonny.

Lois gives her a "who asked you look."

Brenda: Is there any chance that Carly will just go away on her own?
Lois: *Sighing* Probably not.
Carly: Gee, since you are my guests, the least you can do is hear me out.
Brenda: I don’t want to hear about you fantasies.
Carly: Good because I’m not about to tell you my deepest desires. I’m just trying to make a point.
Lois: Make your point, Carly.
Carly: My point is that I used to want Sonny, then I met him and all that changed.
Lois: Wait a minute, you had fantasies about someone you had never even met?
Carly: Yeah, well, Sonny’s reputation kind of proceeded him in my eyes.
Brenda: But the man didn’t live up to the legend?
Carly: The minute I met Sonny any passion I felt evaporated like a drop of water in the Mojave.
Brenda: Oh come on Carly, it couldn’t have been that bad.
Carly: I think it might actually kill Sonny to be nice to me.
Lois: Does that mean that you no longer want to have sex with Sonny?
Carly: Not if he was the last man on earth, besides I love Jason. But we aren’t talking about sex are we?
Brenda: It wasn’t really the issue.
Carly: I used to think the most important thing in the world was sex, now I know love is more important.
Lois: That is pretty deep coming from you, Carly.
Carly: Thank you, I’ll take that as a compliment.
Lois: I meant it as one.
Carly: I love Jason, which makes all the work I had to do to get his attention worth while.
Lois: The difference is that Brenda doesn’t even know how she feels or what she wants.
Brenda: Of course I do, I knew the minute he kissed me tonight, I want to be with Sonny.
Carly: The question is, what are you going to do about your feelings?
Brenda: I’m going to go over there right now and tell Sonny how I feel!

She starts out the door, but is restrained by both Carly and Lois.

Lois: Oh no you’re not.
Carly: You don’t want to seem too eager.
Brenda: You two have got to be kidding?
Lois: Do you want Sonny to think that all he has to do say, "I’m in love with you."?
Carly: Or do you want him to think all he has to do is kiss you?
Lois: Then you come running?
Brenda: It was an amazing kiss.
Lois: It doesn’t matter, you don’t want him to take you for granted.
Brenda: This is coming from the woman who slept with Ned after knowing him for one night?
Carly: Lois, you tramp!
Lois: Exactly my point, Ned took me for granted for so long after that.
