Masquerade Chapter 23-24

Carly: Actually, the same thing happened between Jace and me, I am the queen of tramp.
Brenda: It isn’t like that with Sonny and I, we aren’t rushing into anything.
Carly: Maybe not, but you should still sleep on it.
Brenda: Fine, I feel like a child waiting for Christmas, though. I’m not going to sleep very much!

Brenda found that she could sleep, maybe too well, because when she woke up the next morning she saw things very differently. Carly had brought her a tray with coffee and juice and the morning paper. Brenda glanced at the front page. They had found the body of the man who attacked her, but she really wasn’t that concerned. She trusted that Sonny would take care of that problem and protect her as well as he could with the little information he had. What caught her eye, and made her question Sonny’s true feelings, was in the real-estate section. She read the description for a house in the country with stone fireplaces, a huge living room and a bed room over looking a river.

Brenda: It can’t be the same place, why would Sonny sell our farm.

She pulls out her cell phone and dials a number, only to reach the real-estate agents voice mail.

Brenda: Hello, I’m interested in seeing property # 505, today if possible.

She leaves her name and number and hangs up the phone. She is convinced that there must be some mistake. If Sonny is really in love with her, why would he sell their castle in the air? Needless to say, breakfast was tense that morning. Brenda was so upset, she could hardly eat a bite and what she did eat turned to ashes in her mouth. Sonny kept trying to catch Brenda’s attention, but she would only return Sonny’s gaze with a glare. Of course, he had no way of knowing that she was mad about him selling their dream house. In fact, he had so much on his mind that he hadn’t even thought about the house and land. With nothing else to go on, Sonny was certain that this was Brenda’s way of rejecting his declaration of love. On thought, Sonny’s food just sat on his plate as well, growing as cold and stale as his hopes at a chance with Brenda.

Chapter 24
Sonny sat at a table at Kelly’s, waiting for Tammy to come out and take his order, when in walks Luke.

Luke: A little bellow the No Name Club, isn’t it?
Sonny: Yeah, the pasta is not as good, but the apple pie can’t be beat.
Luke: Speaking of pasta, have you worked out you’re cooking problem?
Sonny: You might say that, I want to be with Brenda.
Luke: You seem pretty sure of yourself, that didn’t take long.
Sonny: I think I always knew that I wanted Brenda.
Luke: Have you told her?
Sonny: Last night, but she needs a little time to get used to the idea.
Luke: Oh I see, she shot you down?
Sonny: Like a duck in a shooting gallery, but it is only a minor set back.
Luke: If you say so man.
Sonny: The point is that I can now concentrate on helping you with your problem.
Luke: I need as much help as I can get.
Sonny: Any leads on what happened to Lucky?
Luke: None, it has been too long and the trail is too cold
Sonny: The trail is never too cold, someone always is lurking around who knows something.
Luke: All I know is that my son is out there somewhere and I paid to bury a stranger.
Sonny: It isn’t like that is a first for you though.
Luke: Hey, those stiffs that I buried when we faked Laura and Leslie’s death don’t count.
Sonny: Tell that to them.
Luke: At least I knew what was happening that time. Not knowing is killing me this go around.
Sonny: At least you have some hope that you’ll see your son again. How is Laura handling the news?
Luke: You have probably seen her more than I have, I’ve been out of town for a few days.
Sonny: Maybe I should drop by and check on Laura.
Luke: You really are concerned about her?
Sonny: Like I’ve told you before, I like your wife.

Luke eyes his friend with a hint of suspicion.

Luke: Yes you have.

Sonny: My kitchen seems to be in order, how about yours?
Luke: I told you Laura is fine.
Sonny: What about Luke and Laura?
Luke: We are better than we have been in months, I think knowing that Lucky is alive has helped.
Sonny: Yeah, amazing how that kind of information can change you’re life.
Luke: Yeah, but your kitchen isn’t in order, you’re balancing a tray with two dishes!
Sonny: What dishes they are though.
Luke: If you aren’t careful, someone is going to get burned.
Sonny: I know, but I don’t really know what I’m going to do about Hannah

At that moment, Tammy walks up to take Sonny’s order.

Tammy: Have you heard from Hannah?
Sonny: She called yesterday, apparently she is really busy with her modeling shoot
Tammy: When you talk to her, tell her I said hello.
Sonny: Sure.
Tammy: Now, what do you need, sweetie?
Sonny: A couple of you’re fresh baked apple pies would be great.
Tammy: You want two apple pies?
Luke: You must be hungry.
Sonny: I’m taking them to a meeting this afternoon.
Luke: Is that your new tactic against Moreno, kill him with kindness and apple?
Tammy: If your meeting isn’t until later, you can come back for pies right from the oven.
Sonny: It’s an ELQ board meeting, I don’t want them to be too good.
Luke: You take apple pies to a board meeting?
Sonny: Carly assigns everyone something to bring, if you don’t she makes you stand in the corner.
Luke: I see she keeps you on a short leash.

Tammy gives him a perturbed look.

Tammy: I’ll get those pies right out. Can I get you anything, Luke?
Luke: Darlen, I own the place, if I need something I can get it myself.
Tammy: Not on my watch, Bobbie has officially banned you from the kitchen.
Sonny: And here you are giving me advice about cooking?
Tammy: That will be the day, I’ll go get those pies.

Sonny and Luke watch her leave, completely unaware that Luke and Sonny are using cooking as a metaphor for their love lives. If she had known, she probably would have given them an ear full about comparing women to dishes of pasta.

Brenda stood in the hall of the house, her eyes as big as a child on Christmas.

Brenda: Wow! This is more beautiful than I ever imagined.
Realtor: Come on and I’ll show you the living room.

Brenda almost got tears in her eyes when she was lead into the living room. It was exactly the way that she had described it to Sonny, down to the last piece of flagstone and the fireplace.

Brenda: This is so amazing.
Realtor: I know, the living room is huge.
Brenda: Big enough to roller blade in.

The Realtor gives her a surprised look.

Realtor: Was that in the description in the paper?
Brenda: No, but it is big enough to roller blade in.
Realtor: I guess so, because the owner said the exact same thing the other day.

A sad smile crosses Brenda’s face.

Brenda: He remembered.
Realtor: What was that?
Brenda: Nothing, may I see the master bedroom now?
Realtor: It’s upstairs, but don’t you want to see the kitchen?
Brenda: Not necessarily
Realtor: The kitchen is the focal point of the house.
Brenda: I don’t really cook.
Realtor: It will be hard to get take out delivered out here.
Brenda: *Giving her a perturbed look* I’ll manage, now are the bedrooms upstairs.

She doesn’t wait for an answer, before she starts upstairs. She knows where everything is in the house. She traveled it’s hallways and rooms many times in her dreams. However, She isn’t emotionally prepared
for the site that greets her in the master bedroom. It is beyond beautiful, it is beyond her wildest dreams. Every detail is perfect, from the window over looking the stream to the color and fabric of the comforter on the bed. The scene is almost a repeat of the one witnessed by Sonny a few days earlier. Sun light is streaming into the room from the skylight in the ceiling illuminating the room with a warm glow. Brenda stands at the bay window, looking out, down to the stream, viewing the exact same scene as Sonny had viewed. Brenda closed her eyes tight and tried to imagine what it would have been like to live here with Sonny. She could almost feel his arms around her waist as she stood in front of the window, leaning back into his protective embrace. She sits on the edge of the bed, what was supposed to be their bed where she would go to sleep each night in his arms and wake up the next morning the same way. She closes her eyes, hoping that if she concentrates enough maybe she could will Sonny into existence. She hopes that maybe it would all be a dream and when she opens her eyes she will see Sonny standing before her, ready to make love to her. She opens her eyes and is actually surprised to see the Realtor standing before her, and not Sonny. It wasn’t a dream, Sonny really was selling her dream house, the only question in her mind was why?

Realtor: Isn’t it fantastic.
Brenda: I don’t understand something though.
Realtor: I’m willing to answer all of your questions.
Brenda: Why would anyone sell such a beautiful house?
Realtor: It’s a little isolated.
Brenda: Yes, but not for the weekends.
Realtor: Let me show you something, but after you see it you might not want to buy the house.

The Realtor takes Brenda and shows her the inscription in the corner of the bed room. The one that reads, "To Brenda With Love."

Realtor: She died before the house was finished. I think he is haunted by her memory.

Brenda is absolutely speechless, that dedication is the most loving thing any one has ever done for her.
At that moment she knows she has to buy the house, she was meant to buy the house. She sees it as a sign that not only were her and Sonny meant to be together, they will be together.

Brenda: *Blinking back tears* I really want to buy this house.

The Realtor seems pretty pleased with herself, as if she had something to do with Brenda’s decision.

Realtor: I’ll have the paper work drawn up right away.

Johnny rushes into Kelly’s out of breath, but approaches Sonny and Luke carefully.

Johnny: Boss, we have a problem.
Sonny: What’s up?
Johnny: Taggert is looking for you and Ms. Barrett.
Sonny: I figured he might be after I read today’s headlines.
Luke: I’m I going to regret renewing our friendship?
Sonny: Not at all, a guy dropped dead in my warehouse, so I dumped him at the dump.
Luke: You mean, you dumped him on Mareno’s territory.
Sonny: Same difference.
Johnny: Taggert wants to see you, Ms. Barrett and Ms. Cerullo downtown.
Sonny: Did you tell Brenda and Lois?
Johnny: That is the problem, I lost Ms. Barrett!
Sonny: *Angry* How did you loose Brenda?
Johnny: She hopped in her car and drove off.
Sonny: I only gave you one simple task, You should have followed her!.
Johnny: She had a car and I was on foot, but I’m sure she will be fine.
Sonny gives Johnny a doubtful look. If anything happened to Brenda, Sonny would blame himself.
