Affairs of the Heart Chapters 1-3

Characters in these chapters of the story

This was the first story I ever wrote and posted on the net.I am really altering reality here. In this story Joseph is still alive, Sonny and Brenda got married before Sonny faked his death and Brenda knew about the whole thing. That is why I titled chapter one "A Trip Down Denile"

Chapter 1 "A Trip Down Denile"
S=Sonny
J=Jason
L=Lois
B=Brenda

It is 1 year and 3 months after Sonny left. Brenda is supposed to join him as soon as he and Jason feel it is safe. Brenda has seen Sonny about 3 times since he left (He returned during November, February and May sweeps.) Brenda is 7 months pregnant from when Sonny returned last May. The baby is due on February 14th. Brenda’s pregnancy has been kept from most of the world because it would be difficult to explain why the grieving widow of a man who has been dead for over a year is about to have a child. Because, to all but a few people Sonny Corinthos is dead and Jason Morgan is his successor in the Organization. It is the middle of December and enough time has passed since Sonny’s "death" for him and Jason to put their plan into action. Jason has met with Sonny 3 times in the past month. Mainly, to transfer money to his boss. He is now on his forth trip. He walks though an alley that would be dangerous in the day and is downright deadly at night. However, Jason Morgan does not seem to care. He cuts though the garbage, the stench and the danger as easily as if he were walking though the park on a Sunday afternoon. He is in his element, a place where he feels most comfortable. The only thing that really bothers him is the smell, other than that he stares straight ahead, only turning his head every now and then to look at an address above a doorway. Finally he finds the one he is looking for 21494. He steps though the door and the impossible happens, the smell actually gets worse and on top of that the place is like an oven. He finds himself in a small dark bar filled with smoke and who knows what else. After his eyes adjust he spots his boss, Sonny Corinthos.

J: This place stinks *Moving up to the table where Sonny is sitting*
S: Yea, I know it is not exactly Luke’s or the PC Grill
J: No I mean it really smells bad in here. Of all the places we have met in this is the worst. What died in here?
S: You name it and it has probably died in here. Most likely in the last 24 hours.

Sonny Corinthos, Jason’s brother, his friend, his boss in exile looks cool and calm, despite the heat and stench. His dark curly hair is combed back and he is wearing a tan cotton shirt slightly unbuttoned. His eyes are dark and serious.

S: Did you bring the money?
Jason places a small leather bag on the table. It is the kind of thing that happens in this bar all the time, so no one pay much attention to what is happening at Sonny and Jason’s table.
J: Yes, but it is getting harder. I could only bring half of what you asked for. I can bring more tomorrow.
S: That is not good.
J: It is the best I can do for now, people are starting to notice.
S: What people?
J: Let me worry about that. I can handle it.
S: Jason…..
J: I said I can handle it.
S: All right, fine. How is Robin.
Sonny was trying to cool Jason off. That much was obvious
J: She is beautiful, she is healthy, she is home for the break and working at GH, and no we are not together. End of story.
S: All right, I get the message. Meet me back here tomorrow night at the same time.
J: Do you think it is safe to meet again in the same place?
S: Sure, after all who would even start to look for me in Brooklyn New York.

After Jason left Sonny stayed at the table for a while. He thought about his life and Brenda and how one was not complete without the other. He thought about their last night together before the wedding. How they had danced the night away and fallen asleep in each others arms. That night the future had seemed bright. A whole life together had seemed possible. That life was still possible. It was just going to be more work to get it. With a sigh Sonny shook himself back to reality. He paid his bar tab, grabbed his jacket and cautiously headed back to his apartment.

Brenda has been staying with Lois and Brook Lynne for the last 2 months, where she is guarded around the clock by Pete and Joseph. Brenda finally had to tell Lois that Sonny is alive however, only a few people know that Brenda is pregnant and of those people, even fewer know that Sonny is alive. For the rest of the people Jason has made up a story about Brenda using banked sperm belonging to Sonny. At first Brenda hated this idea, but Jason told her it was either that or tell everyone that Jax was the father. Brenda finally agreed to Jason’s story. Jason and Brenda have decided that for the time being, Sonny does not need to know that she is pregnant, he needs to concentrate on making arrangements for the two of them to start a new life together.

Brenda is in the kitchen of Lois’ parents house. She is pacing back and forth with a worried look on her face. Even though she is 7 months pregnant she is hardly showing. This, along with many other things worries Lois to no end.

L: Brenda sit down. You’re going to wear the baby out.
Brenda frowns and keeps pacing

B: You know Lo, I have seen Jason here at least 3 times in the past few weeks and he hasn’t been coming to visit us.
L: Maybe he has business here.
B: Yea, and I don’t doubt that his "business" has dark hair and gorgeous dimples and is loved desperately by both of us. Ouch!
L: What, is it the baby? Bren, you have got to relax or you are going to send yourself into premature labor. She takes Brenda by the shoulders and forces her to sit down.
L:You don’t know that Sonny is here.
B: Yes I do. I can feel him close by. And besides, why else would Jason be so secretive about his trips here. If we hadn’t accidentally seen him we would have never known he had been here.
L: Who knows, maybe he has a new girlfriend and doesn’t want you to know because he knows Robin is your best friend.
B: Lois, you know that isn’t true. He still loves Robin too much
L: Well, it was worth a try. Brenda what are you going to do?
B: We have always seen Jason in about the same place. The next time he shows up I am going to follow him to Sonny.
L: Brenda no, you can’t do that.
B: I have to Lo. It has been 7 months. I have to see him.

Lois looks very worried.

L: Bren will you promise me you will sleep on it and not do anything until tomorrow morning?
B: I promise.
L: Good, maybe by morning you will have come to your senses. Now it is late, get to bed.
B: Yes Mom.
She goes to Lois and gives her a hug.

B: You know how much I love you right?
L: Right back at you. Now I need to go check on Brook.

Lois goes to check on Brook Lynne, and Brenda goes up to her room.
Brenda lies down on her bed and thinks about Sonny. She misses him so much she can hardly think straight at times. She thinks about when they first met on the docks when she was moving into the Quartermaine Mansion. She had dropped her bags and he was there to help her. Just like he was always there when she needed him.

*Flash Back*
S: All this time and we haven’t been properly introduced. I am Sonny Corinthos (Sonny smiles).
B: And I am leaving *They both reach for one of her bags and pick it up together*
B: Look I…I have to go okay? *Sonny held her hand and gave her a piercing look*
S: Well it was nice to meet you….What was your name again?
B: *Sighing* Brenda.
S: See you later Brenda!
*Back to Reality*
Brenda can not help but melt when she remembered that look and that touch. It may have been a cold day in the middle of November when they first met, but that had been the hottest touch she had ever known. She misses Sonny so much. Tears start to roll down Brenda’s checks. She starts to weep, letting go of all the anger, fear and loneliness that she has let build up over the last 7 month. She climbs into bed, pulls the covers up and cries.

Chapter 2
Not too far from Brenda, Sonny stands at a small dirty window overlooking an even smaller dirtier alley. He can instinctively feel Brenda’s pain and the fact that he can not be with her and comfort her makes his heart ache. He looks around the small dirty loft. It is the type of place he has been living in since he left Port Charles. It was all he could do until Jason was able to transfer enough money for Brenda and him to live properly. He couldn’t make Brenda live the way he had been living for the past year, she deserved more.
Sonny remembers the first time he was able to see Brenda after he faked his death. It was last November, on the anniversary of Stone’s death. That visit had not gone very well at all.

*Flash Back*
Jason had arranged for Sonny to meet Brenda in a sleazy hotel outside of Port Charles. Sonny was late and Brenda was afraid that something had gone wrong. Finally, there was a soft knock at the door. Brenda opened the door and threw her arms around Sonny’s neck. He was worn out, and just stood there holding on to her for a long time.

B: I am so glad you came. I was so worried that you would be alone today.
S: I had to come today. Jason didn’t want me too.
B: He doesn’t understand about Stone
S: He tries to, but he just can not understand that kind of loss.
B: I know. I can’t believe that it has only been 2 years since Stone’s death. It feels like it has been a hundred. *She rests her head on his shoulder*
S: *Sonny speaks softly and with feeling* I know what you mean. Have you seen Robin today?
B: Not yet, Mac wanted to spend the morning with her. I am meeting her at Kelly’s for lunch.
S: Good, she needs to be around people who love her.
B: Sonny, you should go see her. She needs to know you are alive before we leave together.

Sonny is very quiet and will not look into her eyes. He pulls away from her, but he still will not look at her.

B: Sonny, isn’t that is part of the reason you came back. So we can leave together?
S: Brenda, it’s not safe yet.

Brenda grows angry.

B: When exactly will it be "Safe." Why did you come back?

Tears start to form in her eyes

S: I’m sorry Brenda. I didn’t want to be alone today. I didn’t come here to hurt you.
B: Maybe you should just leave.

Sonny walks over and softly kisses her forehead, and then he walks out the door.
That was how his first visit ended, with Sonny feeling empty and lonely and with Brenda in tears.

*Back to Reality*
Sonny laid down on his bed and starred at the ceiling and tried to think of ways to make everything up to the woman he loved.

Laura Spencer had just gotten her daughter Leslie Lu to sleep and
her son Lucky was out on a date. Her
husband Luke was at a meeting. The front door lock rattles and in
walks Luke.

La: How did it go?
Lu: Great, Sonny and Brenda’s fake passports are ready and waiting
whenever Jason gives the word. Actually it is some of my finest work, if I do say so myself.

He hands her the fake passports.

La: Mr. and Mrs. Mauricio Morales. Luke where do you come up with these names?
Lu: *Luke smiles* It’s a gift baby. Did you finally get Lu Lu to
sleep?''
La: Yes after reading her the Ugly Duckling 3 times.
Lu: She is probably trying to figure out, if the Ugly Ducking
turned into a swan, what did her old man start out as to end up so ugly now.
Laura goes over to Luke and hugs him.
La: You have changed a lot since when we first met.
Lu. Yeah, I’m not in the mob anymore, or on the run and there is not always some one trying to kill me or punch my lights out.

Laura gives him a look of doubt
.
Lu: Well at least the first to parts are true and who would have thought I would ever even own a copy of the Ugly Duckling. So where is the Cowboy?

La: *Sighing* Lucky is on a date with Elizabeth Webber.

Luke smiles.

Lu: I like that girl. She’s got spunk.
La: That is what I am afraid of.
Lu: Lucky can handle Elisabeth with his eyes closed.
La: That is what I am afraid of.

Luke gives her a kiss and they head upstairs to bed.

Jason had an uneasy feeling about this meeting, but Sonny had
assured him this would be the last time they would have to transfer money directly. Sonny now had enough to set himself and Brenda up in a new life. A life of safety and luxury. There were only a few more details and then he would be able to go back for Brenda. Even before Jason stepped into the bar he knew that Sonny was not there yet. This was strange because Jason was running late, which was something that Sonny never did. He found a table where he could watch the door and ordered a beer.

S: Jason *Sonny had come from behind him*
J: Where’d you come from?
S: Back door.
J: Sonny I don’t like this. We have met here too many times and it is too close to where you are hiding out.
S: I don’t want to carry this much money too far.
J: I understand that Sonny, but people in the organization are starting to question all the money I am personally handling.
S: Can you cover it?
J: Yeah I’ve got it covered, but any interest in my Brooklyn operation is not good.
S: Did you have any problems today?
J: Not really, just Brenda.
S: Brenda? *Sonny felt a knot tighten in his gut at the mention of her name*
J: She tried to follow me to you, but I lead her to a good neighborhood and lost her there. Joseph checked in
about 30 minutes ago, she made it back to the Cerrulo’s safely.
S: Does she know that you saw her.
J: I don't think so. She is hard to miss though, especially with Joseph and Pete tailing after her.
S: She followed you from Port Charles?
J: No, she is staying here with Lois.
S: She's here! How long has she been staying with Lois?
J: Two months
S: Damn it Jason! *He raises his voice a little* Why didn’t you tell me she was here!
J: *Quietly and calmly* You didn’t ask where she was, so I didn’t tell you. She has been safe, Pete and Joseph are watching her. I didn’t want you to worry about her and the timing is not good for you to see her.
S: You should have told me.
J: Maybe I should have. But if it were up to me you wouldn’t even be thinking about her right now. You need to stay focused.

Sonny thought about that idea. Not thinking about Brenda. It was
impossible, He never stopped thinking about her, never stopped wanting her, never stopped missing her. He missed holding her and touching her and waking up next to her in the morning. All this was for her though, and soon they would be together.

     Chapter 3

Brenda stands in the kitchen at the Cerrulo's while Lois glares at
her. She feels like a teenager that has been caught sneaking
out of the house after curfew.

L: Brenda how could you do it. How could you follow Jason like
that.
B: I had to do it. I have to see Sonny. Don't treat me like a child
that has disobeyed you Lois.
L: I'm sorry Brenda. I don't mean to treat you like a child. I worry about you and so would Sonny if he knew what you were doing.
B: Lo, I was so close I could feel him, then I lost Jason.
L: You mean Jason lost you.
B: Whatever.
L: Bren, Jason is smart, he is not going to let you see Sonny just because you want to.
B: I know that, and having Joseph and Pete following me doesn't
help.
L: Do you think that they tipped Jason off about you following him.
B: They didn't have to. They communicate telepathically or something. But, if they think I am giving up they are wrong. I will see Sonny.
L: Brenda, why now after all this time?
B: It is hard to explain, but Sonny needs me I can feel it.
Lois gives Brenda a worried look.
L: It's late I am going to bed. Come on you need your rest.
B: You go ahead. I will be up soon.
L: Brenda, promise me you won't do anything!
B: I promise Lo, I won't do anything. *As Lois leaves Brenda adds,*
Tonight. I won't do anything tonight.

Brenda sits at the table and thinks about the second time that she
saw Sonny after he faked his own death. On Valentines Day, 1998. After Sonny had returned for Stone's
anniversary Brenda did not see him again. He had sent her a Christmas present through Jason. The present was a silver and bloodstone necklace to match the ring he had given her on her 21st birthday.

     *Flash Back*
It was Valentines Day and Brenda had gone down to the docks. Her mind kind of wandered as she thought about Sonny. She was barely aware of Joseph watching her from the shadows. She
dropped her handbag and bent to pick it up, but a hand was already on it and brushed hers lightly.
B: Thank you Joseph. *The touch had been electric.* She lifted her eyes and met his. It was not Joseph, it was Sonny. He was wearing a long dark blue overcoat, an electric blue scarf and a gray brimmed hat pulled low on his brow. He moved out of the shadows.

S: You still mad?

Brenda answered him by pulling him into an alley, and leaning against him and kissing him fiercely and passionately. A few minutes later they pulled apart, both of them gasping for air. They
just held each other for a long time, feeling each others hearts beating and just enjoying being in each others arms.

S: You didn't answer my question.
B: What do you think?

Sonny answers her with more kisses.

B: Can we go somewhere?
S: You read my mind. I sent Joseph to get the car.

Joseph brings the car around and Sonny opens the door, helps Brenda into the back seat and gets in behind her. He looks at the way that Brenda is dressed, in a paint suit and flat shoes.
S: That will do for now.
B: What will do? Where are we going?
S: It's a surprise.

They pull up to one of the entrances to the catacombs. Joseph stops
the car, Sonny gets out with a lantern in his hand.

S: Joseph, stay here and keep your eyes and ears open.
Jo: Sure thing boss.

Sonny escorts Brenda out of the car and towards the entrance to the catacombs.
B: Sonny, were going in there? Have you lost your mind. We're not
going in there. I don't like the dark and you are
claustrophobic or have you forgotten all of that.
S: Brenda it will be fine. I promise, my claustrophobia is not that
bad any more and your surprise is in there. But if you really
don't want to go in I understand. I won't make you do anything you
don't want to do.
Even before Sonny had finished talking Brenda was at the entrance.
Sonny used the lantern to look at a map drawn on a
scrape of paper. After several twists and turns in the tunnels
Brenda could see light up ahead.
S: That's it. Just where Spencer said it would be.
He ran ahead of Brenda to the end of the tunnel
S: Come and take a look.
What Brenda sees takes her breath away. The tunnel opens up into a
protected outdoor grotto with a cascading waterfall
and reflecting pool. All around the pool candles are burning and
off to one side a table is set with the finest china and flowers.
The air is warm and sweet.
B: It is beautiful here, but why is it so warm.
S: The water is from a hot spring and it heats the air as well. I
Think there is something for you over there.
He points to the a rock on which is the long red dress that he gave
her to wear the night before their wedding.
B: This is so perfect. How did you manage to do this?
S: Actually, you can thank Luke. He told me about the place and set
everything up. I just told him what I wanted. *Sonny
hands her a rose. Brenda smiles at him and picks up the dress*
B: Will you wait here while I change?
     S: I'm not going anywhere.
They spent the evening eating and talking and making love under the
stars. That night their problems had disappeared, if only
for a few hours. Before Sonny had to leave they even went for a
swim in the warm water of the reflecting pool. The following
May they had spent a similar night in their private paradise and it
was on that night, in May, that the child that Brenda now
     carried had been conceived.

     *Back to Reality*
Brenda shook herself back to reality and went up to bed with
pleasant thoughts on her mind. She would see Sonny soon.
She could feel it in ever fiber of her body.

Across town in the bar Jason handed Sonny the bag of money.
J: That should be enough to get you and Brenda established in Costa
Rica. Luke is almost finished with the documentation.
He wants to bring them himself.
S: Are you okay with that.
J: I guess. I need to stay in Port Charles anyway and try to get
some of the heat off of me.
S: I am sorry for bringing all of this down on you.
J: I've told you before, I can handle it. The sooner we can get you
and Brenda away from here the better.
S: Give me a couple of days to get things squared away and then we
need to let Brenda know that things are going to start
happening and when they do she is going to have to be ready to move
fast.
J: Let me contact her. I am not positive that she is not being
watched and I don't want you taking unnecessary risks.
     S: All right
J: Your not going to argue with me about this?
S: No, you’re my eyes and ears out there. I trust your judgment.
J: What should I tell Luke?
Sonny writes something on a piece of paper.
S: Give Spencer this address and have him meet me there 2 days from
now.
     Jason looks at the address.
J: Sonny this is just around the corner.
S: I don't want to be to far away from my home base right now.
J: I understand that. Look, you just said that you trusted my
judgment, so I'm telling you this is a bad idea.
S: It will be okay. Moving around town is a worse idea. Not to
mention I have a lot of cash stashed in that dump that I don't
want to leave it for too long.
Jason still does not agree, but he keeps quiet.
S: When you see Brenda tell her I love her and I will see her soon.
     Jason gets up to leave.
S: Jason, I don't know how to thank you.
J: Stay alive. That is all the thanks I need.
     S: I plan on it.

Even though it is late Laura is wide awake. She lies in bed and
thinks about how lucky she is to be safe and in her own home
and not have to worry about packing up her family and leaving town
on a moments notice. Beside her Luke is having no
trouble sleeping, in fact he is snoring with a look of complete
glee on his face. She nudges her husband until he wakes up.

     Lu: *Barley awake* What's wrong?
     La: I can't sleep.
Lu: I can and that is what I am going to do. Try warm milk. *He
turns over and tries to go back to sleep.*
La: Luke! *He reluctantly opens his eyes and sits up.*
Lu: All right , what is troubling you.
La: I was just thinking about Sonny and Brenda and how hard it is
to live life on the run. I guess I was mainly thinking about
     Brenda.
Lu: Yeah, it can be hard.
La: I remember missing Ruby' fresh pie and walking down to the
docks and buying roasted chestnuts in the winter.
Sometimes I felt like I couldn't take it anymore.
Lu: How did you take it for all of those years.
La: I had you at first, and then I had both you and Lucky. That
made it all worth it.
Lu: Well, if Brenda and Sonny love each other ½ as much as we love
each other, then they will be just fine.
     La:: I guess you're right.
Lu: Now can we both go back to sleep?
La: I have a better idea. *Laura leans over and kisses him
passionately.*
Luke reaches over and turns off the bedside light.

2 days later Lois is downstairs trying to feed Brooke Lynn her
morning cereal. Brenda comes down stairs in high spirits, but
     she looks tired.

B: Good morning Brooke, how is my favorite Goddaughter this
morning?
Brooke babbles something and throws her bowl and cereal on the
floor. Lois sighs.
B: Well, between you and Ned, I guess she couldn't help but have a
temper.
L: Look who is talking. How are you feeling Brenda? Did you sleep
well?
     B: Yeah, I slept great.
Lois pours Brenda a cup of mint tea. Brenda takes a sip and makes
and an face.
B: Are you sure this stuff is good for pregnancy?
L: Yeah, Maw swears by it. She says that Sonny's mother drank it
when she was pregnant with him.
B: Well that explains a lot.
Brenda dumps about ½ a cup of sugar into the tea. Lois' eyes get
big in shock.
L: Brenda that much sugar is bad for the baby!
Brenda ignores her and continues to drink the sweet liquid.
B: Lo, I want you to cancel all your plans for today. You, me and
Brooke are going shopping.
Lois gets a smile on her face.
L: Now that is the Brenda that I know and love.
B: Right, I need to start buying Christmas presents and then you
can help me lose Twiddle De and Twiddle Dumb so that I
can go see Sonny! *She points to Pete and Joseph*
Lois sighs as she cleans up Brooke's cereal.
L: I should have known it was too good to be true.
