Chapter 4
S=Sonny

Sonny is restless waiting for his meeting with Luke. He paces
around the apartment and suddenly realizes that the place is
starting to feel like a prison cell. It is just too small, he has
to get out. He grabs a jacket, baseball cap and pair of sun glasses
and heads out the door for a walk. He realizes it’s dangerous and
foolish, but something tells him to head towards 5th
Avenue.
Joseph parks the car and Brenda, Lois and Brook Lynne step out
followed closely by Pete.
B: Lo, shopping was a great idea. I love 5th Avenue at Christmas
time. I am so glad you thought of it.
L: Yeah Bren, whatever. *Lois rolls her eyes as she sets up Brook’s
stroller.*
She didn’t approve one bit of Brenda’s plan to ''Loose'' Pete and
Joseph, but she knew Brenda was going to go through
with it no matter what.
Jo: Where would you like to start Mrs. Corinthos?
B: I don’t care. As long as there are plenty of restroom’s along
the way. Lois, you never mentioned that when you are
pregnant you always need to pee.
L: Unfortunately Bren, it is just going to get worse in the next
month or so.
Jo: This way. *He ushers the girls towards a store.*
Sonny has been walking for about an hour and as he rounds a corner
he sees a sight that makes his heart stop. Just ahead of
him are Lois, Brenda and Brook Lynne. And following behind them are
Pete and Joseph, their arms are loaded with
packages. Brenda looks gorgeous, she is wearing a long coat, the
winter sun is reflecting off her hair and she is laughing. She
looks different in some way.There is a glow around her that Sonny
can not exactly put his finger on. He has never seen her
look so beautiful. Sonny just stares at her for a few moments,
drinking in her beauty and forgetting to breath. He suddenly
realizes that he has stopped breathing and he has to make a effort
to start again. He moves just close enough to hear what
they are saying, but still be out of view.
B: Okay, we only have a few more shops on this side of the street
and then we can break for lunch.
L: Come on Bren, I think that we should go back to the car and let
the guys unload some of these packages.
P: Yeah, what are we now anyway doormen? *He turns to Joseph* Do I
look like a doorman to you?
Jo: No, not really.
B: Hey guys, look someone has to carry the packages. You surely
don’t expect me to do it and Lois is pushing the stroller.
As long as you two are following me, you might as well be useful.
Jo: But we’re supposed to be protecting you. How can we do that if
our arms are full of packages?
B: *Brenda stops in front of a shop* Sorry guys bathroom break.
I’ll just be a sec.
She goes into a shop. Pete and Joseph exchange exasperated looks.
Lois just shrugs.
As Brenda walks into the shop, Sonny finds the strength to head
back to his apartment. In a few hours the waiting would be
over.
Joseph looks at his watch. Brenda had been gone for 15 minutes.
Jo: She has been in there for a long time.
L: Well you know Brenda, she probably found some clothes to try on
or something.
Lois is not very convincing and the guys sense that she is lying
and rush into the store.
P: Where is she?
C: Who?
Jo: The pregnant woman who just came in here!
C: Her? She used the ladies room and then left though the back
door.
Joseph and Pete run out the back door into an empty alley. They
look at each other and run around to where they left Lois
and Brook Lynne, they are gone as well.
P: Bet you the car is gone.
Jo: I am generally a gambling man, but no deal.
P: Lets go find a cab and then I guess you had better call Jason.
Jo: Why do I have to call?
P: Because it’s your turn.
Jo: Hey wait, I called him last time, when she tried to trace the
boss’s cell phone number remember?
P: No I don’t remember. Besides, I called the time when she wanted
us to put out a hit on that pizza guy who didn’t deliver
in under 30 minutes.
Jo: Your right. I guess it is my turn. Come on lets go. Maybe we’ll
get lucky and she just went home and forgot to tell us..
P: Yeah right, and maybe I’ll win the lottery.
Luke is in his office at the club preparing to leave for Brooklyn
and his meeting with Sonny. He checks his watch, he still has
a few hours before the meeting. Laura comes in with a worried look
on her face.
La: Luke, promise me you will be careful tonight.
Lu: Hey, no need to worry. All I am doing is delivering some pieces
of paper to a dead guy. Nothing could be simpler.
La: I was just thinking about the time when you and Sonny planed on
breaking Frank Smith out of jail and I was pregnant
with Lu Lu and now that Brenda is pregnant……………
Lu: What did you say? Brenda is going to have a Baby?
He could not believe that Sonny, his best friend hadn’t told him.
Unless, Sonny didn’t know.
La: You mean Jason didn’t tell you?
Lu: No, he didn’t. Does Sonny know?
La: I don’t think so. Brenda told me because she thought I would
understand. But Her and Jason thought that Sonny could
concentrate better on the plan if he didn’t know.
Lu: That might have been true, but how far along is she, 3 months?
La: No, 7, the baby is due February 14th.
Lu: Sonny has to be told right away. He has to figure all of this
into his plan.
La: Luke it is not impossible to give birth on the run, I did.
Lu: Yes, but Brenda is not you.
Luke’s cellular phone rings. Without even answering it he looks at his watch and nods.
Lu: It’s show time.
La: I love you. Be careful.
Lu: I love you too. I’ll be home in time for breakfast.
With that he is out the door.
Lois stands and surveys the dirty loft that Brenda has rented. It
is near the last place that Brenda saw Jason and she feels it is
close to where Sonny is hiding.
L: Why are we here Brenda?
B: Because this is where Jason was headed the last time I saw him,
before he realized I was following him.
L: I feel bad about what we did to Pete and Joseph. I hope Jason
doesn’t get too mad at them.
B: I doubt he will. Besides I had to get rid of them. It’s like
Jason can communicate with them telepathically or something .
L: Yeah, well I wouldn’t doubt it. Jason is like that. But what if
he is meeting Sonny someplace completely different this time.
B: No, Sonny is near here. I can feel that this is where I need to
be.
L: No, you need to be home taking care of yourself and your and
Sonny’s baby. But I know when you have made up your
mind. So I am just going to leave and go home and pray that you
come to your senses and that what ever happens you will
be all right.
B: Thanks Lo, I will be just fine as soon as I see Sonny.
Jason sat sipping a beer at the Recovery Room, the bar owned by
Mike Corbin. Jason had spent a lot of time there after
Sonny left town. He told mike that it was because he liked the beer
there more than at Jake’s and he tended to see less
people he knew at the Recovery Room than he saw at Luke’s. Mike was
convinced that it was because Jason liked to listen
to his advice, particularly when it came to Jason’s relationship
with Robin. Tonight Mike was especially happy because
Robin was meeting Jason at the recovery room to talk.
M: This is a good sign.
J: What now Mike?
M: You and Robin meeting to talk, maybe there is still hope for you
two.
When Sonny had left he had made Jason promise to go easy on Mike.
However, that was often easier said than done, but
Jason was going to let his comments slid, for tonight at least.
Sonny had decided he wanted Mike and Robin to know the
truth, about him being alive, before he and Brenda left for good
J: This is not really about Robin and me. Actually, it is something
you need to know too. It is about Sonny.
M: Look Jason, I would rather not talk about Michael if you don’t
mind.
Even after all of this time, thinking about Sonny still hurt. Mike
had so many regrets where his son was concerned.
J: Mike, Sonny is alive.
M: What are you talking about?
J: Sonny left the mob and had to fake his own death.
M: *He is in shock* Who knew about this?
J: Only those who had to know. Brenda, Luke, Me and a few men and
Jax and his brother Jerry.
M: Jax knew? Why would you tell Jax and not me?
J: Sonny needed help from someone that nobody would think would
help him.
M: But, Jax? He and Sonny can’t even stand each other. They have
nothing in common, except Brenda.
Mike tails off, suddenly realizing
J: Yea, Sonny knew that his only chance to get away would be to
slip out of town on the day of his funeral. He knew all of
the Big Shots would be there scooping out his territory, sizing up
me as Sonny’s successor and trying to figure out if the grief
displayed by the people that loved Sonny was real or not.
M: Oh, it was real all right, at least coming from me.
J: I am sorry, but we couldn’t tell Robin either. It had to look
real.
M: You told ''Crazy'' Jerry Jacks about this and let Robin, Lois
and Me all believe that Sonny was dead.
J: There had to be some real grief or else it would not have
worked. As for Jax and his crazy brother, I think that Sonny
brought them in for several reasons. The Jacks brothers had some
connections and abilities that Sonny needed. I also think
that Sonny wanted to let Jax know that he and Brenda were still
together and that he was coming back for her. Sonny asked
Jax to look after Brenda, but to remember that she was still
Sonny’s wife and not to get too close.
M: Well Jax did a great job of ''Not getting to close,'' since he
left town 2 months after Sonny did. Who all knows about this
now?
J: In addition to the ones who have known from the start, Luke had
to eventually tell Laura and Brenda told Lois and now
you know. I am going to tell Robin tonight.
M: So that story that Brenda told about using some of Sonny’s
banked sperm to become pregnant was a lie, right?
J: Yea that was my idea.
M: Thank God for small miracles.
J: We figured that some people would have to be told about the baby
and it was the best way we could think of to explain it.
M: That was pretty low Jason. Does Sonny know about the baby?
J: Not yet. Luke is going to tell him tonight. Brenda and I decided
that he did not need the distraction………….
Jason’s cellular phone rings
J: To Mike* Hang on a minute*
J: Hello…… What? When did this happen? No, I don’t want to hear
excuses. I am on my way, no Joseph you both sit tight.
I think I know where she went.
He hangs up the phone and looks worried.
M: Trouble?
J: Yea, spelled with a capital B
M: Brenda? It’s not the baby is it?
J: No, I got to go. Tell Robin that something came up and I had to
leave. I will call her when I get back.
M: I will, let me know what happens.
J: When I hear something that I can let you know I will
Mike nods in understanding.
Chapter 5
S=Sonny
J=Jason
L=Lois
B=Brenda
La=Laura
Lu=Luke
Jo=Joesph
Luke and Sonny have just finished their meeting with no problems.
Luke has brought the new identifications and other papers
that Sonny and Brenda will need in their new life together. It has
been decided that Jason will let Brenda know that it is
almost time for her and Sonny to leave for good. Luke is about to
leave the bar. But first he has to tell Sonny about Brenda’s
pregnancy.
S: I owe you more than I can ever repay in one lifetime Spencer.
Lu: I know it Corinthos. But I like having a bunch of debts owed to
me, it is like having money in the bank. All I ask is that
you stay alive and someday show up to repay me.
S: I’ll do my best.
Lu: Before we part company, there is one other thing you need to
know, it’s about Brenda. But, I don’t want to talk here.
S: OK, lets go for a walk.
They step out into the alley and they have not gone ten steps when
they hear a woman scream.
Sonny turns around, and in what seems like slow motion, sees Brenda
and two men, one aiming a gun at him the other
holding one on her. At the same time he sees Luke draw his gun,
hears and smells a gun being fired, feels the warmth of
blood flowing form his shoulder and then everything goes black.
Brenda screams again and rushes to Sonny. Meanwhile Luke has fired
to shots and taken out the man who was holding
Brenda and the man who shot Sonny.
B: Oh no Sonny, no this can’t be happening.
She is desperately trying to stop the blood that is flowing from an
unknown area and staining Sonny’s shirt. In the distance
police sirens can be heard. Luke goes and looks at Sonny’s wound.
L: It’s not that bad.
He turns and grabs Brenda by the arms and shakes her slightly.
Lu: Come on we have to get him out of here. The police will be here
any minute and I don’t feel like explaining why those
guys are dead and a well known, presumed dead crime lord is alive.
B: But we have to get help for Sonny, I don’t think we should move
him. He can’t die!
Brenda begins to sob uncontrollably. Luke is still holding on to
her and speaks to her in a controlled, yet urgent tone
Lu: Look Brenda, I know you are scared, but Sonny’s best chance for
survival is for us to get him away from here and to
somewhere safe and close.
B: The loft I rented, it is right over there! *She points to
another alley*
Lu: OK, lets go, quickly!
Brenda leads the way, while Luke carries Sonny. The police sirens
get closer.
Jason sits across the table from Lois. He is trying to be calm, he
doesn’t want to scare her but, he wants her to know that the
situation is serious and urgent.
J: Lois, I know that there was nothing you could do to stop Brenda
but, we need to know where she has gone.
L OK, I’ll show you.
J: OK, Joseph you Come with me. Pete you stay here, if we have not
reported to you in 1 hour you get out with the
Cerullo’s and Brook and go to one of the safe houses. Understand?
Pete nods.
J: (To Lois and Joseph) Come on!
Brenda and Luke have taken Sonny up to the loft and Brenda has
taken his shirt and torn it in to strips to clean and bind his
wound. After she cleaned it, as best she could, she could see that
the bullet had only grazed his right shoulder and the wound
was not as bad as it had first looked. Luke had slipped out to go
find supplies to remove the bullet and bandage the wound.
Brenda has her head on Sonny’s chest, listening to his heart
beating and the sound of his shallow breath. He has been
unconcionse but, since she has stopped his wound from bleeding he
opens his eyes and stirs. Brenda lifts her head and
smiles.
S: (Weakly) Hi
B: Hi, I was so scared, I thought the baby and I were going to lose
you
Sonny looks at her.
S: So I didn’t imagine it. Your pregnant, when…….
Brenda shushes him by lightly kissing him on the lips.
B: Shush, we will talk about it later. Sonny right now I just need
to hold you and take care of you.
Tears start to fall down her cheeks and she wraps her arms light
around him and he rests his head on her shoulder and falls
back asleep.
Jason, Lois and Joseph rush into the alley, only to find it jam
packed with police officers. They stop dead in there tracks.
L: Brenda!
J: She’s not here. Where is this loft she rented?
Lois points and Jason and Joseph are all ready on there way up the
stairs. Inside the building they find Luke sitting on some
stairs
J: Luke! What happened, the alley down there is swarming with cops.
L: Where are Brenda and Sonny? Are they all right.
Lu: They are together in the loft. They are both going to be all
right but, Sonny was shot
J: What? Exactly what happened tonight?
Lu: I am not really sure. Sonny and I had finished up with our
meeting and had just stepped out in to the alley when all hell
broke loose. When it was over, Sonny had been shot and I had killed
the two gun men. I fixed Sonny up pretty well and got
him something for the pain. He should be safe enough here, the
police will think that who ever was involved in this is long
gone.
L: What can we do for Sonny?
Lu: I think what he needs right now is rest and Brenda
J: I think the last thing he ever needs is Brenda. When she is
around Sonny nearly gets killed.
Lois shakes her head
L: It has to be his decision Jason
J: Sonny pays me to make decisions when he can’t.
He turns to Luke
J: Any idea who did this?
Lu: None and none of us are really gona be safe until we find out
Jason pulls out his phone. And dials a pager. In a few minutes his
phone rings
J: Yea, there has been trouble here Pete, you had better clear out
of there for a while and get everyone to a safe house.
Contact me in the usual way when you get there.
In the loft Brenda is holding Sonny’s hand while he sleeps. His
breathing is more regular and color is starting to return to his
face. She kisses him lightly on the forehead. He opens his eyes and
makes a sound.
S: Just like how it all started huh. I get shot and you take care
of me.
Brenda smiles with her eyes full of tears.
B: Yea, except this time around I am your wife, I am 7 months
pregnant with your child and I know what a tourniquet is.
He smiles at her. Her eyes fill with tears.
B: Oh Sonny don’t hate me please. Can you ever forgive me?
S: For what, for spending the last year and 7 months scared,
pregnant and alone?
B: No, for this. For ruining the whole plan, for letting those guys
follow me and for you getting shot. I love you so much. I
don’t want to lose you.
S: It is not your fault sweetheart. They could have followed Jason,
or Luke or even me. You saved me again and you are
never going to lose me. I love you too much. But, what were you
doing here how did you know I was in trouble and needed
you.
B: I just knew. I had to see you.
Sonny smiles and kisses her.
S: Thank you for saving me. So what are we having?
B: What?
S: The baby Brenda, is it a girl or a boy.
B: I don’t know
S: You have been seeing a doctor haven’t you
B: Yes, of course. But, I told them I didn’t want to know what it
was. It is going to be born on February 14th so if it is a girl
I would like to name it Valentina.
S: That is a beautiful name. You know after Lily died I went to the
library and got baby books. I wanted to know what stages her and my baby would have been developing at as time went by. After that I never thought that I could ever be
happy again. Then you came back into my life and know we are going
to have a baby in two months. The two of you are all I need and want.
Brenda looks sad.
B: I am sorry honey. Do you feel cheated because I didn't tell you
about the baby sooner.
S: Come here
He takes her face tenderly in his hands and they kiss long and passionately.
S: What do you think?
Brenda smiles and kisses him again.
B: I think, I have missed you more than words can say.
Chapter 6
Jason, Luke and Lois are still waiting on the stairs to the loft.
They hear more sirens and a couple of cops run past the
enterance to the loft. All three of them stand absolutely still.
L: Is it safe here?
Lu: If the cops haven't checked this place by now, then it should
be safe. Those guys lying out there are from rival groups,
the cops probably think that they shot each other.
J: What went wrong?
Lu: I don't know anymore than what I have already told you.
J: Maybe Brenda can tell us more.
Lu: Maybe. Jounor, can you handle things here. I promised Laura I
would be home in time for breakfast.
Jason looks at his watch.
J: I don't think there is going to be much trouble here tonight.
I've called for back up, just in case. But I think it will be awhile
before the person responsible for this tires again.
Lu: I think your right. This was sloopy, an amachure show to be
sure. Who ever did this is going to need time to recover.
J: Just so you know, I told Mike about Sonny being alive right
before I got the call about Brenda.
Lu: Thanks for telling me man. What should I say to him?
J: Just that they are both fine. Don't say anything else for right
now.
*Luke starts to leave. *
J: wait. I just have one favor to ask. Will you take Lois to the
safe house? I don't want to leave Sonny.
Lu: Sure, after you Ms. Cerullo.
L: Okay, but first can I pleas check on Bren, just to make sure she
is alright.
Luke leds the way up to the loft. Joesph is standing guard outside
the door to the apartment. He opens the door for Lois,
Jason and Luke. Sonny is sleeping and Brenda has her arm around him
and is resting her head on his chest. She looks up as
the three enter.
L: Brenda are you Okay?
B: Lois, what are you doing here?
J: She showed us where you had gone. Good thing you were smart
enough to tell her what you where you were going. Luke
shoots him a ''Cool it.'' look
L: Brenda, I was so scared when I saw all the police in the alley.
What happened?
B: I was waiting for Jason to show up and instead Luke showed up.
Only he wasn't alone, someone was following him.
J: You were tailed Spencer?
Lu: Impossible. Are you sure Brenda?
B: I only what I saw. Some guy following you. So I followed him.
Then another guy grabbed me and that was when you and
Sonny showed up.
Luke still could not believe that he had been folowed.
Lu: I was careful. They must have been watching me ever since I
left Port Chuckeles.
J: Yeah if not before.
B: Wait, does this mean what I think it means. They weren't
following me, they were following Luke. This wasn't my fault!
Jason looks reluctant to cominte. But finaly with the help of looks
from Luke, he has no choice.
J: Yeah, it looks that way. Look Brenda, I'm sorry. Thank you for
taking care of Sonny.
Brenda smiles. Lois looks over at Sonny who is still asleep.
L: Is he all right?
Lu: Yeah he will be fine in a week or so. The bullet just grazed
his shoulder. We had better go.
Lois and Luke start to leave. Lois turns to Brenda.
L: Bren, are you coming?
Brenda looks at Sonny and shakes her head.
B: No, I need to stay here.
No one argues with her. Either they are all to tired, or they know
they can't win. Luke indictes the supplies that he got for Sonny's wound.
Lu: Make sure he takes one of those pills every 6 hours and that
his dressing gets changed daily.
Brenda smiles.
B: I know the drill.
Luke and Lois leave, but Jason stays. There is an uncomfortable
silence between the two. Then Jason picks up several
blankets and places them on the nearby couch.
J: I think that the couch will be more comfortable for you and the
baby. I will stay by his side and wake you if he needs anything.
Brenda gives Sonny one more gental kiss and walks over to the couch.
B: Thanks Jason, thanks for everything.
Brenda is asleep before her head hits the couch.
