"Relating to kids!"- page 3

Now have you done exercises 1& 2?

If you haven't then go back to the previous two pages, and do so, NOW!

You've learned how important it is to put things into the language of a kid. And you've even done a little of it yourself! Which I hope will be but the start of many, many times! And now you are probably aware of just how important it is! And of what a little role it is assigned!

In fact...

Ask yourself honestly if you're guilty of putting things in words that people can't understand!

When you work with kids, from the start of your time to the very end always put things into words that they can understand! From activities, to stories, to memory verses, to instructions. When I say everything, I MEAN EVERYTHING! Even if you use a planned curriculum, it's often not in kid's terms. So look at it. And change it if it's not! Just because the person that wrote the curriculum has a bunch of degrees after their name, doesn't mean that they know this principle.

What if you don't know what's a kid's language?

Then invest in a children's word book. There are a bunch out there. The kind that you need is the kind for kid's writers. The one that I use and recommend can be gotten from Writer's Digest Books, 1507 Dana Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45207. It will tell you what is appropriate "wordwise" for each age.

Now let's look at some other ways to relate to children!

Being a kid's heigth!
This may sound crazy, but study after study, after everlovin' study have shown that people are intimidated by people taller than they are. So, in order to have a "leg up" in the relating to kids department, squat down to their level when talking to them, especialy one on one.

Show love to kids
In this day when about half the kids are from 1 parent homes, and most people are scared to show love to anybody, for fear of being sued, showing real love for kids, in the form of showing interest in their "goings ons" in their lives, and even having each kid hug you as they leave your care, will work wonders. So will praise for a child. Be lavish in your praise! Praise their attempts at games, and activities. Praise their memorization skills when it comes to the memory verse. Praise them when they give a right answer. Praise them to the degree that you can when they give a wrong answer. Praise their outfits. I mean praise, praise,

praise!
