As for my own experience...

I have found a couple ways to make money with the guilds I have joined. I am level 42 woodworking and level 11 goldsmithing.

In woodworking, with a high enough level, you can get HQ synths out of arrowwood lumber and other lumbers. Arrowwood logs sell for 15 gil at the guild. use a winnd crystal and an arrowwood log to make 1 arrowwood lumber, a HQ synth will give you 2-4 pieces. Wind crystal stacks sell for 1400 in windurst. If you make only normal synths and no HQ synths it costs 1580 to make a stack of arrowwood lumber. They sell for 2500-3000 around the different AHs. Each HQ synth raises your proffit. I make bout 10k/day from this method

In goldsmithing you can sell brass ingots for about 8k/stack of 12. At level 8, I believe, in gold smithing you can make brass ingots. Use a fire crystal, 3 copper ores, and 1 zinc ore. Fire crystals are about 1800/stack. Copper ore if you buy it at the goldsmithing guild or the smithing guild you can buy them for 9-18 gil. Zinc sell in AH for around 300. Your total cost for making 1 stack is 6048, on the high side (using 18gil/copper ore as referance).
