Firstly, you will need an IRC client. If you don't, mIRC is what I've always used, and as far as I know it works fine.
Once mIRC is installed (or if it's already installed), look at the options menu that pops up when you start it (or click the hammer & folder icon, second on the toolbar, if it does not). Click "Add", and enter the following details:
Description: (Whatever you like, it doesn't matter.)
IRC Server: irc.exhile.net
Leave the other boxes as their default values. Click OK, and this should add Exhile to your list of servers (it will be listed as whatever you put for Description). Now fill out the Full Name and Email Address boxes (they don't have to be your actual full name and email address, but you need to put something) and your Nickname (this is what you will be called on IRC). For "Alternative", just put a "2" or similar at the end of your nickname. If the nickname you specified for Nickname is already taken, you will go by the alternative name entered here instead.
Now, click Connect to IRC Server. When connected, a box will pop up asking what channel you wish to join. Enter #rpgtrivia. (If the box does not come up, type /join #rpgtrivia in the space at the bottom of the only window onscreen and press enter.)
Now you should have successfully joined the channel. You should read the instructions and rules next.
