Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura ("Return of Lum" in English) is not a person. It's the name of the entire series. The title is a pun in Japanese: urusai means "obnoxious," "annoying," or "noisy" and yatsu means "guy" or "fellow". ra is simply a somewhat informal plural. Urusei is a mispronunciation of urusai. In Japanese writing, it is written as: u ru hoshi ya tsu ra, where hoshi is the Chinese character for "star". An alternative pronunciation for hoshi, used only in a compound word, is sei. Hence Urusei Yatsura= "noisy-star guys" or, "Those obnoxious aliens". Urusei Yatsura, known in America as the Return of Lum, is the first series created by Rumiko Takahashi, known for her Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku. The manga ran for 9 years and LOTS of volumes, spaning both a TV series and 6 movies. Urusei Yatsura was a loved hit in the 80's and only now are we Americans finding out about the charm of the series, courtesy of Viz, who publishes the manga, and AnimEgo, who releases the TV episodes. What's the big deal? It all starts when the hapless, luckless Ataru Moroboshi on his way home finds out he's been chosen randomly by a computer to defend Earth from alien intruders. These aliens are like the mythological Oni of Japanese culture, and true to their oni origins, they say that if Ataru can grab the horns of the Emperor's daughter in a ten day game of tag, Earth is saved. Ataru isn't exactly jumping in joy, but when he finds his oponent is the bikini-clad Lum, he quickly accepts, since he has a lust for anything in a skirt. Alas, nobody told poor Ataru that Lum could fly and discharge electric bolts... He quickly looses his interest in Lum when he sees that the ten days are almost over. Shinobu, his childhood friend and Ataru's pseudo-girlfriend, says that if he wins, she'll marry him. Challenged, Ataru vows he'll win, and manages to steal Lum's bikini-top, the only one she has. Finally, after Lum comes back to take her top, Ataru grabs her horns! Earth is saved! A joyous, Ataru exclaims, "Now I can get married!" But... Lum hears him an tells her daddy that Ataru wants to marry her, thinking he was proposing to her. (In oni legends, if one grabs an oni's horn, you get a wish.) Next thing Ataru knows, Shinobu dumps him and an alien princess moves in his room and auto-proclaims herself Ataru's wife... ...and that's just in the first episode! Things go downhill for Ataru in this hilarious comedy! From the filthy rich Shutaro Mendo, to the vengeful Ran, to that annoying firebreathing pipsqueak Ten, everyone and everything plots to take down poor Ataru and take Lum from him. (Not that he wanted her in the first place...)
