These are used to travel distances by going to another dimension in the pattern where time and distances don't seem to matter. It is thought to be from here that the Seanchan get ther animals.
They can only be used by channelers, and then only if they know what the symbols mean (there are different ones on the columns resembling different realities and worlds).
