From the front yard of the Stone Toga Inn (the Stone Toga Mark) go west once, southwest once, north once, west twice, south once then southwest once. (walk to toga; W - SW - N - Wx2 - S - SW)
It should be noted that thugs and brutes only come out at night. Don't bother with hunting the alleys in the daytime, they won't be there. Considering the small size of the alleys overall and the limited window of opportunity for hunting there it should be obvious that the alleys will be a little crowded with players come nightfall.

My best advice is to claim an intersection immediately before the night falls and wait. Otherwise you will have to wander the alleys getting only an occasional encounter while those who have claimed an intersection get a majority of them. (It is considered rude and presumptuous to hang around an intersection when someone else got there before you, without their permission. Like street performers and prostitutes on the corners of every major city anywhere, prime spots are claimed early and protect from interlopers).
If you are still something of a newbie I recommend getting a friend or two together and pack-hunting here.
Thugs                                              daggers, armor, coin (in thug's pouch)

Thugs are fairly difficult to kill because, as they are human and wield weapons, they have a wide variety of attacks at their disposal such as stab, slash, etc. as well as armed combat maneuvers. But, if you are skilled in ACM's yourself, or at least in a couple of subskill attacks and block, they shouldn't prove too tough for you. Thugs are the most common encounter in the alleys.
Brutes                                          leather helmets, armor, coin (in brute's pouch)
Brutes, on the other hand, are very tough and have ended the life of many a well known and loved veteran character. Don't fight a brute unless you have a reasonable chance of hitting them, some good armor, at least two good subskill attacks and blocks and a luck! point. Brutes are bad about delivering unexpected critical hits, you see, and an unexpected critical hit can break even the most hardened warrior. Again, exercise caution with this these buggers.
