I grew up in a small hamlet on the outskirts of Jordia. From a young age I showed an uncanny knack for handling animals. At the tender age of 5, I accompanied the shepherds into the fields, watching over the flock and protecting them from beasts and predators.
At 25 I received the great honor to be the head shepherd of a good sized flock for a local rancher. For the past several years I diligently watched over that herd, however, with the hard times brought about by increased goblin raids on the surrounding countryside, the rancher has been forced to lay off most of his workers.
This includes me.
On my last day of work, I lay under the shade of a tree watching the sheep graze. I knew I should probably be heading back to the corral, but it was so comfortable laying in the soft grass. My eyelids got heavier and heavier and my breathing slowed as I relaxed for a quick nap.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over my half-closed eyes. They fluttered open and I noticed a lone sheep standing over me. The sheep (a ewe I think) was staring straight at me.
"Toefur Burrfoot, you have been an excellent guardian over my children. Though your role as a herder of sheep is over, your job as a protector is not. The balance is shifting. The land and its children--my children--will suffer. You will be my champion against the coming darkness.
"Go into the city. I will be sending someone to be your helper and guide."
I bolted upright. "How long have I been asleep," I wondered. The sun had begun its decent towards the horizon. I looked around. The sheep were still grazing below me. The talking sheep was nowhere to be found.
I returned the sheep to the stable and wandered along a dusty road towards Joordia, confused at this episode with the talking sheep. At first I thought it must have just been a dream, but the impression was so strong that it must have been real!
