What is a Pernese Dragon?
A pernese dragon is basically a dragon
that lives on the planet Pern. They were
bred from small, dragon-like reptiles
called fire lizards. These dragons serve a few
purposes. The first, and most
important, is to flame against Thread. Thread is
deadly, and the dragon's job is to
sear it before it can reach the groud to burrow
and spread. Pernese dragons can't
produce flames anytime, they have to chew a
special kind of rock. This rock contains
phosphine and reacts to substances in the
dragon's stomach and allows them to belch fire.
Pernese dragons come in 5 basic colors.
Blue, green, brown, bronze, and gold.
The blue dragons are the smallest
of the male dragons, and the greens are the
smallest of the females. Brown dragons are
the second largest of the male dragons,
and the bronze dragons are the
largest. Bronze dragons mate with the golden
queens, and the queens cannot chew
firestone because it reacts with their stomach
differently and all that is made is a sticky
paste. Instead, the queen riders use flame
throwers to sear Thread.
Each dragon has a rider, which are
psychologically joined at the dragons hatching.
This joining is called Impression.
The dragons and their riders have the ability to
telepathically communticate with each
other. Normally, riders can only speak to
their own dragon, but there have been
exceptions like Weyr-Woman Lessa and
Healer Brekke who could speak to any dragon.
Pernese dragons reflect their emotions
through their eyes. Red is hunger or anger,
green and blue are neutral or calm,
and yellow is fright, or concern. The speed at
which the colors
whirl in their eyes depicts the intesity of their emotions.
Wheel and turn
Or bleed and burn,
Fly between,
Blue and green.
Soar, dive down,
Bronze and Brown.
Dragonmen must fly
When Threads are in the sky.
