A Marsh Kat's Personality

The feral Marsh Kats are the throwbacks of the Time of Madness. They are wild and vicious creatures, and though not inherently cruel, they are often xenophobic and have little to do with other kat breeds. They often attack non-Marsh trespassers in their swamps, or hide until the intruder has left. Valley Kats are always attacked and killed or driven away. Marshes absolutely cannot stand the tricks and cheerfulness of Valleys. They sometimes tolerate Beach Kats and Plains Kats, however: Beaches for their also watery homes, and Plains for their incredible fighting prowess. These untamed kats avoid Alcaine and other large kat cities like the plague, and there are no exceptions to this rule, though more town-like settlements near the swamps may attract a more tolerant Marsh or two. Marsh Kats are much like wolves, living in Packs---not Clans---with a hierarchy based on strength. Unless Elders remain strong in their final years, they do not get the respect that the Elders of other breeds do. Black Marsh Kats are the most respected if they are strong, since acid and poison make a deadly combination. Green kats also get a lot of respect, since their abilities cause the very marshes to attack their foe. Silvers are extremely rare and the few that are born are looked on as a sort of oddity, since most silver abilities are not attacks, but they are also kept under watchful eyes, since older silvers learn the powerful Spirit Beam, followed by Spirit Bomb. Gold kats are occasionally sneered at, though their healing powers are acknowledged.

What a Marsh Kat Looks Like

Marsh Kats resemble Forest Kats, albeit larger and much more muscular. Their legs are long, to hold their bodies out of the swamps, but powerfully built to fight the suction of the murky terrain. Their fur is very short and exudes a greasy coating to repel swamp water and muck, and keep body heat in. Because of this coating, Marsh Kats abhor hot weather and dry climates. The fur of their tails is extremely short on both males and females so as not to accumulate swamp-muck. Their eyes are slightly large, and their ears are small with thickly furred insides so as to keep swamp water out. Females' ears do not have tufts. The manes of male Marsh Kats are vastly different from the manes of the other breeds. It is zebra-like instead of lion-like, a scruffy line of fur following the neck and spine that ends beyond the shoulder blades. Marsh Kats cannot retract their claws, which are much larger than usual, and extra tough so as to resist breaking. The defining characteristic of Marsh Kats is their large curved upper canines, resembling those of the Sabre-toothed Tiger. On males these canines grow extremely long, while on females they are much smaller, jutting at most an inch or two below the chin. Marsh Kats can open their mouths extremely wide---to an extreme distance that's eerie to watch---so as to use their deadly teeth in ferocious bites. These sabre canines do not grow until the kat is in its second level. Both teeth and claws of Marsh Kats are worthless as currency, as so few other kats have heard of the breed. Besides: the term 'currency' is meaningless to a Marsh kat.
