There are many local bands around the Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland area. It seems that if you have the instruments and decent singer, you have a band. There is one band in the area that has those aspects and a whole lot more.
In March of 2002, the band, with the help of producer Patrick Doody, recorded their first album titled “Starbound.” The album features ten original songs, which like any other rock songs, have themes pertaining to sex, drugs and rock and roll. It also touches on other issues socially and politically. Songs that stand out the title track “Starbound,” “Out of Rage” and “Body to the Father.” The band calms things down with “Get Up and Bleed” (which is my favorite song).
“Starbound” is a great album for a band that is just starting out. They play better than some bands that have had many albums under their belt. However, you do not get the full effect of the band unless you see them live in concert. They play right to the audience. Van Hoose has this awesome stage persona that pulls the audience right into the song. Riehl, who traveled from Texas to join the band, is an excellent guitar player. Raven and DeLeurere are also very talented in what they do.
Together, Othercide is unstoppable. They have played venues all over the Chicagoland area and have also traveled as far away to Indianapolis and Detroit. Othercide recently played at PUC’s Music for the Masses back on Oct. 11. They brought the house down with not only songs from “Starbound,” they even introduced two new songs “Poster Boy” and “Sworn Arora.”
Othercide is truly a band that loves what they do. “Music is a language in which you speak in notes,” Deleurere said, “The experience of playing in a band gives you a connection with your band mates. You know when you are on.” Raven agrees, “We play what we love and are all heart.”
Othercide knows that there is always something new to learn while making music. “We are proud of what we do,” Raven said. “We are always learning. We love going out and seeing other bands to learn more things.”

BAND: "OTHERCIDE"
CD: "Starbound" (2002)
A 4 piece held together by a few talented musicians and strong lyrical content, Othercide comes highly recommend on my list. With family tunes such as "Porn Addiction" this metal influenced band is sure to make it's listener squirm and smile at the same time, if that's possible. It is true a few songs make me want to question the sanity of its writers but in no way does that bring down the value of the song but on the contrary only add to it's interest.
With an even mix of guitar, bass and drums Othercide repeatedly smacks you in the face with their vivid sound. I would be proud to tell anyone who asked that this short but unique audio disk has gone round and around in the half fried piece of plastic that has come to be known as my CD player.
