  7. As far as I can tell this is pretty much a base Firebird. It does have the instrument panel with all the guages (no 'dummy' lights).

I aquired this car from my dad for helping him build a pole barn. However, at the time the car needed some work. The first thing that had to be done was replace a bearing in the front passenger's side. Both of the front wheel bearings were replaced and new brake calipers were put on the front of the car. The first major thing that I did to the Firebird was get it repainted. My dad and I did the bodywork and primer job ourselves. I then took the car to a local Maaco to have the finsih coat painted. In all I had about $350 in primer and the paintjob. The spring after I repainted the car I came to the conclusion that the old hubcaps on the car just didn't look that great. I bought a set of Z-Racing rims from Sears which really sharpened up the car. I also added a CD player to the Firebird(The new wheels and the CD player were later transfered to my 85'.)

During my freshmen year of college I stored the Firebird in a barn while I was at school, so it never got drove except for a couple of weekends a month. While in storage the engine aquired a massive oil leak from the front of the engine block. At first I contemplated whether to have the engine rebuilt or to just find another 2.8 litre engine. I really wasn't sure if I would have enought time to change the engine in it because by that time I only had 2 1/2 months until school started back up and I was planning on bringing a car with me this year. I was keeping a look out for a new engine until I came across the 85' Firebird.

Instead of selling the 84' I decided to hang on to it and totally restore it. So far here are the upgrades that I plan to do to it. Some of these will probably change several times before I am able to get started on the car.

    1. I'm planning on installing a 3.4 from a 93 - 95 Firebird or Camaro. I was contemplating on dropping in a 350, but after a lot of thought I decided that I can basically buy a Trans Am GTA or a Formula 350 for not much more than it would cost me to convert the V6 to a V8. The 3.4 is almost identical to the 2.8 liter. Basically I'll be dressing the 3.4 with everything from the 2.8, except for the heads and exhaust manifolds. There will be some small details that will have to be worked out, but it should be a very straight foreward swap. Swapping in any V6 other than a 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 will be as much work as swapping in a V8. The reason for this is that 2.8's, 3.1's and 3.4's are all 60 degree engines. V6's such as 3.8 and 4.3 are 90 degree engines just like a 305 or 350. For more information on the 2.8 - 3.4 swap visit the The 2.8-3.4 Swap Boogie in the Technical Articals at Thirdgen.org .
    2. I may decide to add a 4 bbl carb after I have the 3.4 running.
    3. Install headers. I may have to modify a set of 3.4 headers or have a custom set made, depending if an aftermarket company decides to manufacture headers.
    4. I'd like to either install a Formula/Trans Am power -buldge style hood, buy a RAM AIR II hood, or have a custom scoop of some sort installed on the origional hood.
    5. Have the car repainted
    6. Replace most of the interior (seats, carpet, headliner, and possibly some of the plastic in the trunk) I've heard that the both the front and back seats out of a 4th generation Firebird will fit. This should make it a lot easier to replace the interior.
