More About Me

YES I like Elvis...it's almost an obsession, and I can't really explain it. Mike in Nashville, 2001

When I was in High School (1976 grad) Elvis was not cool...Chicago, KISS, The Eagles, etc. were cool.  I NEVER listened to Elvis or country music up there in southern Michigan.

I studied music in college with the clarinet being my major instrument and also played sax in the jazz band, and sang in 2 different choirs.

I started liking country music after hearing it more in Texas.  I started liking Elvis after choosing one cassette of his when joining a record club - his Greatest Hits.  I also had some friends with some Elvis videos.  Gradually I got more and more interested in Elvis' music, and music from the 50's and 60's in general.  In the same group of tapes I got from the record club were Aretha Franklin, B. B. King, James Brown, and Chuck Berry.

It came with a remote and MOST IMPORTANTLY adjusts the pitch of the music up or down.  This magically allowed me to sing many more of Elvis' songs.

I bought a group of 20 background cassettes on Ebay.  I also bought the Music Maestro "Velvethalloween2000b.jpg (53958 bytes) Elvis" collection of 300 tracks.  Armed with all these and the machine, I hauled my stereo out to the driveway and hooked the karaoke machine to it (used my guitar amp too).  I also made a big "ELVIS" sign with red lights on a 4 X 8 piece of pegboard.

I've spent the time after that going ELVIS CRAZY! I am collecting his movies; watch a concert video almost every night; bought the 50's, 60's and 70's Masters CD sets; went to an impersonator contest in Louisville (I was blown away); went to Graceland...etc.etc.etc.  I performed for a convention at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville (I was going for work and Nashville - note the static cling...I have since lined the suit volunteered).

I am now planning a huge Elvis Halloween 2001 show in my driveway.  I will start with young Elvis, then do a set of Elvis in the Movies, then end with the 70's Elvis.  I bought a Fender Passport 250 PA system to use.  Also an army dress uniform and black ankle boots.  I still need lights, a red jacket I'll add 2 white stripes to, and a Hawaiian shirt with a red pattern.

After that I would like to go to some more impersonator contests...but my company is closing so my first priority of course will be to get another job.  If I ever feel I'm good enough, I will try to find paying Elvis gigs.

I'm trying to get a group together to go Christmas caroling dressed in Elvis jumpsuits - see this site: https://www.angelfire.com/rock2/sugarlandTXelvi/index.htm.  If you're in the Houston, TX area and are interested, please contact me! This is copying, of course, the Fresno Christmas Elvis group.

Also I have always worked in the insurance business, but am making a career change to PC support and network management.  I'm A+ certified and am working on the MCSE designation.  I also have done lots of web pages.  You can see my online resume at http://members.tripod.com/powell-pics-cool/hiremike.htm.  If you need a PC or network support person, who can also do web pages, in the Houston, TX USA area, contact me!
