Anyone doubting the impact of Limp Bizkit's meteoric rise to the top of the music charts, need look no further than their frenzied set during Woodstock '99. The image of Bizkit frontman Fred Durst surfing the crowd atop a sheet of plywood (ripped from the stage by attendees of the event), as his bandmates blast through the rage-infused song, "Break Stuff," will forever be one of the defining moments of the festival. In 1999, Limp Bizkit have become the new monsters of rock, joining--if not supplanting--their peers in Korn as leaders of the platinum-selling rap/metal hybrid.
Vocalist Durst, who grew up in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina, had dreams of stardom early on when he abandoned his educational pursuits (he dropped out of Gastonia college after a mere four days) with ambitions of becoming either a rapper or skateboarder. "I was definitely not a good student in school" he confesses, "I was the teachers favourite dude, I passed 'coz I was like kissing my teachers ass, and pretty much I never did my homework I don't even know how I made it..it was like a social event for me it was a place to skateboard and rap and beatbox and break dance pretty much was school was for me.. But I did pass..I did graduate because they couldn't stand me..but that's it..I'm a loser."
Fred was a professional break dancer and DJ, and when he was younger, his dad made him a break dancing studio in his garage , and his mom made his band's costumes. Following a period of about a year--that saw him bounce from one friend's couch to another--Durst, out of money, and in an attempt to gain the acceptance of his religious parents, joined the Navy at age 19. He served for eighteen months before being released on medical discharge after he broke his hand skateboarding.
Fred later married at age 20 and had a daughter name Adriana Durst. When Fred found his wife 'Sage' was cheating on him he filed for divorce, and after he physically abused his ex-wife's new lover spent a month behind bars. "I was living in San Francisco and I was married and I found out that my wife cheated on me. I got into a fight with the guy and her and I went to jail over it. I just spent a lot of time thinking in jail--it was the first time I had ever been in jail. It was terrible. I just said I gotta go start over again. So I went back to North Carolina to say good-bye to some friends and I worked at a skate-park for a while because I was a sponsored skate-boarder. Then I took my car and moved down to Florida and started all over again. I was working jobs doing art for people and I started tattooing and it was just getting nowhere." "I've sinned so many ways it's unbelievable. I've robbed stores. I've had plenty of sex. I've lied terribly. I've cheated. I've been greedy. I've lusted. Everything! I've done it all. I need some support and help from above now. I grew up as a rebellious kid who was always locked up in his room. When I got out, I wasn't bad, I just didn't know what was right or wrong. My dad was an adoptive dad--we didn't get along that killer. I have another brother that's his son. My mom and I were always confronting. It was real easy for me to snap on my mom and for her to snap on me. It was just a weird thing. "
After having a month to think things over in jail, Fred decided to just simply start over. He worked at a skate-park since he was a sponsored skate-boarder.
At age 21, Durst followed his parents to Jacksonville, Florida, to start over again; their place of retirement, where he worked for his father's landscaping company before a career change, becoming a reputable tattoo artist. Fred has many tattoos, such as Boba Fett from Star Wars on his lower arm, A diamond ring on one of his fingers and a LB tree logo and a reddish design on his neck. Fred's mum was a church administrator and his dad was a narcotics officer. Fred has recently moved into his $1.36 million 3,500 square foot home in Coldwater Canyon in LA.
The band thing was a side thing and I was way serious but nobody else was because there was no music scene here. So I just went to see every band I could and found that there was nobody serious but I'd pick one person from each band. Like Sam Rivers stuck out of his band, he was serious and go-hard. Wes Borland stuck out of his band and John Otto in his. I said, "hey, I'm really serious. I wanna do this. I wanna mix a lot of things and these are my ideas." I already had some songs written and we started playing those out and it caught on. Then we all started getting the chemistry and writing together and realised it was real. We gave a friend the demo and he passed it on to Ross, producer and people were vibing on us. I was acting like I was my own manager on the phone. I'd change my voice and I'd change my name and was talking shit to all these record companies. Just bull- crap, not knowing a thing about the industry, but they believed me, because I'm a good bull-shitter. Then I really needed management because people were flying out too see us and there was no one here to talk to."
By 1994, Limp Bizkit began when Durst and long-time friend, bassist Sam Rivers started working on material. Rivers' cousin, drummer John Otto joined soon after, with guitarist Wes Borland and former House Of Pain member DJ Lethal following suit. Their name paid homage, as revealed in an early press release, to one of their "burned out, pot smoking maniac" roadies. In 1999, Limp Bizkit had become full-blown rock stars, complete with the status that encompasses it. Durst now had a famous girlfriend in Baywatch's Carmen Electra. "I came to Jacksonville five years ago. I was trying to put together some bands mixing all of the styles I like. I've been rapping since 1982, DJ'ing since 1985. I've been a punk rocker since 1983. Limp Bizkit's music has been a reflection of many artists, including Fred's favourites, Run DMC, Korn, Tool, Ministry, Suicide Machines and the Wu-Tang Clan.
Fred got the band Limp Bizkit together and went through plenty of rough times to get where he is today. He's currently the Vice President of Interscope records, signing bands like Staind.
Fred Durst isn't only a great front man for the band but he's also an excellent video director. He has directed several videos for his own band including "Re-Arranged", "Nookie" and "Break Stuff". He's directed videos for Staind too, called "Home", "Just Go" and KoRn's "Falling Away From Me". He is currently working with David Fincher, directing his first feature film together called "Nature's Call".
Fred has made cameos in the videos for Methods of Mayhem's "Get Naked", KoRn's "Got the Life", Kid Rock's "Bawitaba" and Eminem's "New Slimshady".
Fred also has an English bulldog named Bizkit, and his favourite movie is 'Apocalypse Now'. He also owns over 30 New York Yankees hats. His shoe size is 11 and his hat size 7 and 3/8. He is also a Budweiser man. He designed the 'Limp bizkit is better than everyone' T-shirt and sticker.
