SENATE TO VOTE ON ASHCROFT!

Background:

The full Senate will be voting to confirm John Ashcroft as
Attorney General within the next day or two. Please call
your Senators TODAY and tell them to vote against
Ashcroft. Your calls make a difference!

WHY YOUR SENATORS SHOULD VOTE AGAINST
ASHCROFT:

---- As both Missouri Attorney General and Governor,
Ashcroft allowed the state police to seize citizens' property
without finding them guilty of committing any crime - a
practice, known as civil asset forfeiture, that Congress
reformed at a federal level last year. Ashcroft also allowed
Missouri police to keep money seized under state asset
forfeiture laws that should have went to school funding, a
policy later ruled to "violate the Missouri Constitution" by a
Federal Appeals Court. (See Dennis Cole v. United States of
America, United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit,
No. 97-2210; and "Missouri Cops Said Ashcroft Agreed To
Look The Other Way on Forfeiture Law " By Daniel Forbes,
on-line at http://prorev.com/ashcroft.htm . Also, see Kansas
City Star reports on asset forfeiture, at
http://www.kcstar.com/projects/drugforfeit/ .)

--Ashcroft dismisses research from the American Medical
Association and the Center for Disease Control showing that
needle exchange programs reduce the spread of AIDS and
HIV, reduce drug use, and save lives. He even voted against
funding research that would study needle exchange programs
to see if they work, arguing that even investigating the science
behind needle exchange programs was 'intolerable.' (See
"Clinton Supports Needle Exchange But Not Funding", The
Washington Post, April 4, 1998; also "No Federal Money for
Needle Swaps", Orange County Register, April 21, 1998.)

--Ashcroft opposes spending any money on a demand side
approach, believing that a government that shifts resources to
drug treatment and prevention instead of police and prisons "is
a government that accommodates us at our lowest and least."
As Attorney General he would likely oppose any efforts to
divert drug users from prison to drug treatment programs. (See
Ashcroft's speech before the Claremont Institute at
http://www.claremont.org/ashcroft2.cfm . Also, "Could
Ashcroft Roll Back Drug Policy Reform", Salon.com, on-line
at http://www.salon.com/politics/feature/2001/01/17/drug_courts/index.html
and "Out of Sight," New York Times, January 6, 2001.)

--Ashcroft sponsored or co-sponsored dozens of extremist
drug war bills during his Senate career. Most notably, he was
the chief architect of the Methamphetamine Anti-proliferation
Act (S. 486), which would have created new mandatory
minimum sentences, made certain kinds of drug-related speech
federal crimes, and given law-enforcement officers broad new
powers to secretly search people's homes - none of which have
been scientifically proven to reduce the use or sale of
methamphetamines. Ashcroft also supports revoking the
driver's licenses of anyone arrested for using marijuana, even if
they weren't driving at the time, and throwing entire families out
of public housing if one of their members is suspected of using
or selling drugs, even if the other family members are innocent.

Causes", Wall Street Journal, January 15, 2001; Drug Warriors
and Their Prey by Richard Miller, Praeger Publishing; and

ACTIONS TO TAKE:

-- Call your Senators TODAY and tell them to vote against
Ashcroft. America doesn't want an Attorney General who
rejects drug policy based on scientific evidence and research.

-- Forward this e-mail to as many friends, family members,
and co-workers as possible. Ask them to read it and take
action.

January 17, 2001

STOP JOHN ASHCROFT FROM BECOMING ATTORNEY
GENERAL

BACKGROUND:

President-elect George W. Bush has nominated recently defeated
Senator John Ashcroft (R-MO) to be U.S. Attorney General.
Ashcroft is an ardent drug warrior who supports harsh sentences for
non-violent drug offenders, opposes drug treatment and needle
exchange programs, and repeatedly tramples on the Bill of Rights in
the name of the War on Drugs. He can only become Attorney General,
however, if the Senate votes to confirm his nomination. The Senate
Judiciary Committee begins his confirmation hearing today. We need
you to call your Senators on the Judiciary Committee today and tell
them to vote against Ashcroft. Every call makes a difference, make
your voice heard.

WHY ASHCROFT SHOULD NOT BE ATTORNEY GENERAL:

--Ashcroft sponsored or co-sponsored dozens of extremist drug war
bills during his Senate career. Most notably, he was the chief architect
of the Methamphetamine Anti-proliferation Act (S. 486), which would
have created new mandatory minimum sentences, made certain kinds of
drug-related speech federal crimes, and given law-enforcement officers
broad new powers to secretly search people's homes - none of which
have been scientifically proven to reduce the use or sale of
methamphetamines. Ashcroft also supports revoking the driver's licenses
of anyone arrested for using marijuana (even if they weren't driving at the
time) and throwing entire families out of public housing if one of their
members is suspected of using or selling drugs (even if the other family
members are innocent.)

--Ashcroft opposes spending any money on a demand side approach,
believing that a government that shifts resources to drug treatment and
prevention instead of police and prisons "is a government that
accommodates us at our lowest and least." As Attorney General he
would likely oppose any efforts to divert drug users from prison to
drug treatment programs.

--Ashcroft dismisses research from the American Medical Association
and the Center for Disease Control showing that needle exchange
programs reduce the spread of AIDS and HIV, reduce drug use, and
save lives. He even voted against funding research that would study
needle exchange programs to see if they work, arguing that even
investigating the science behind needle exchange programs will send the
'wrong' message to our nation's youth.

Actions to Take:

--If your Senators are on the Senate Judiciary Committee, call their
offices today and tell them to vote against John Ashcroft for Attorney
General. (See the Committee list below to find out if either of your
Senators is on the Committee.) Every phone call counts and we need
to put pressure on Committee members right away.

-- Forward this e-mail to as many friends, family members, and co-
workers as possible. Ask them to read it and take action.
