January 2002

Before I start a new set of pictures and commentary for 2002 I should mention that poor Malcolm (the builder) was completely knocked for six by a terrible bout of flu over the Christmas period. Aside from worrying us sick, it also meant that we all had a well deserved break from the house. So before we get back into our painty overalls, let me bring you up to date ...

Glossed Door Kitchen Tiling Finished

Glossed Door: As unexciting as it may seem the fact that this door is glossed means we are close to finishing the painting, which has been only marginally less horrible than steaming the ceilings!

Kitchen Tiling Finished: The kitchen is coming along in leaps and bounds, I love the colour of these tiles, and they complete the red theme which will run through the rooms dowstairs, which brings me to the newly painted War Room ...

The War Room The Sea

The War Room: This was a tough one, my mum wasn't convinced that red would be a good choice for this room but Philip and I were determined. After much cogitation I figured that a break at picture rail height(ish) in the red would stop the colour becoming overwhelming. So with sterling help from the mums and an awful lot of low-tack masking tape we got our red room. For the record the top 18 inches of the walls, the coving, ceiling and woodwork are all cream.

The Sea: This is the view from the (ex)leaky dormer window. We have been debating setting this room up as an office, but I am quite sure no work would get done with this lovely outlook to enjoy!

The Front New Lintel

The Front: This turned out to be quite a staggering photo, the sun was shining on the front of the house, where Philip is painting the balcony, but a huge black cloud was looming at the back. You can also see from this pic that we have finally had the dormer window fixed. The deck has been fibreglassed and a new PVC fascia fitted to align it with the fascia over the balcony.

New Lintel: I didn't know this, as I was outside at the time, but the roof of the dormer was so badly bowed that Malcolm had to bring in two jacks and jack the roof up to fit a new lintel! I'm glad I missed that bit.

Pew Ends

Pew Ends: Leaning against the wall underneath the window you can see the ends of the pew which is going to form our fireplace, Pat has been expertly restoring them ready for Malc to fit. On the platform is the seat part of the pew which will become the mantelshelf. It's going to look great!
