Chapter 31

Fluttering her eyes, Hannah’s mother stared blankly at her daughter and Nick. “Han…” she whispered, barely audible.

“Oh mom!” Hannah cried and embraced her. Hugging her tightly tears streamed down her face. “I’ve missed you so much.”

"What’s going on?” her mother broke away startled by her surroundings.

Taking hold of her hand, Hannah sat on the bedside, “There was an accident mom, a bad one...but you’re going to be alright, I know it. Do you remember anything?”

Straining her memory she rubbed her forehead, “Uh, I’m…I’m not sure. Who’s that?” she asked pointing to Nick.

“Oh, um Mom this is Nick…he’s a close friend of mine,” Hannah smiled. “Uh, Nick why don’t you go get the nurse so she can check on my mom?” she suggested, hinting that she wanted some time alone.

“Of course, and I’m glad to see you again Mrs. Morgan,” Nick smiled and kissed her check before leaving the room.

Not sure what do to, Hannah impatiently looked around the room. It had been so long since she’d spoken to her mother, not since the day of their argument. Sighing she tightened her grip on her mother’s hand. Under some cuts and bruises, she looked relatively the same. Still the same eyes, but with a little less sparkle to them. “I love you mom,” Hannah broke the silence.

“I love you to Han,” she whispered with a small tear forming in her eyes. “You’ll always be my Hannah Banana.”

“Mom,” Hannah whined, “you know I hate it when you call me that.”

“I know,” she laughed, “believe me I know Hannah Banana.” The two started laughing as Nick and Dr. Meadows walked through the door.

“I see you finally decided to wake up Mrs. Morgan,” the doctor said checking her monitors. “I’m Dr. Meadows by the way,” he smiled, “so, what can you tell us about the other night?” Hannah excused herself from her seat and joined Nick in the doorway, so the doctor could check out her mom. Nick trailed his hands up and down her back, as together they watched her mom struggle to remember.

“I…I don’t know, sorry. It’s all just a blur.”

“That’s alright Mrs. Morgan, what matters is that you’re going to be ok.”

Hannah’s eyes perked up, “She is?”

“Yep, it’ll take a few days for her to get back in tip-top condition but she’s going to be just fine,” he turned to face Hannah’s mom, “You’re rather lucky too…that was one big car crash you were in. But I guess you could say your condition helped you out in the long run, your increased flexibility decreased your injuries.”

“Condition?”

“Uh, we can go over that on our own,” Hannah broke in, “Thank you so much for everything Dr. Meadows, I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it.”

“Well you’re very welcome, I’ll be back to check up on you later,” he smiled before leaving the room. Nick looked at Hannah, and decided to busy himself with the newspaper out in the hall. “If you need anything I’ll be just outside,” he said kissing her cheek.

“OK, love you,” she sighed. “Oh, and maybe you should think about packing for the wedding, you’ll be leaving tomorrow morning right?” Nick started to protest, but she stopped him. “Now Nick, you promised…and I really don’t need you here. Right now my main focus is my mom.”

“Fine, I’ll go as promised. Actually I’ll go pack some bags now, then I’ll come back and leave straight from here in the morning,” he surrendered. “I’ll be back in around an hour.”

After Nick left Hannah joined her mother on the bed. It was hard but she told her everything about the accident, as her mother sat listening with tears sliding down her cheeks. “I’m such a failure,” she cried, “I’ve hurt you so much.”

“Oh, no…no mom, you’re not a failure. You made some mistakes yes but that does not make you a failure. Look how much you’ve done with your life. Look at the daughter you’ve raised. You’re strong, you’ll get better…I’ll help you get better.”

As Hannah and her mom reconnected Nick made his way down the highway. Slipping his phone out of his pocket he dialed up Kevin. “Hey, Kevin…great news, she woke up.”

“Aw Nick, that’s wonderful. Is she going to be ok?”

“According to the doctor yes, she’ll be good as new. Actually the reason I’m calling is because Hannah wants me to attend your wedding, you know…to give her and her mom some alone time.”

“Yes, I can imagine you hanging around wouldn’t allow them much time to reunite. That’s great, so are you going to fly up here tonight?”

“No, I’m leaving first thing in the morning.”

“Oh, alright…what time does your plane get in, one of us can pick you up.”

“Ooo, around 11:30 probably, but you don’t have to send anyone…I’ll take a cab.”

“Don’t even think it…there’ll be a good few hundred people here Nick, one of them can pick you up.”

“Alright,” Nick laughed, “Till tomorrow then.”

“Yea, I’ll see you tomorrow. Give Hannah and her mom a kiss for me.”

“Sure, no problem there.”

“Ok, bye Nick.”

“Bye,” Nick smiled as he hung up the phone. As much as he hated to admit it he was looking forward to getting away for a couple days, it would be good for both him and Hannah. She needed time with her mom and he needed time to reconnect with his bandmates. This distance would be a good thing.
