Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in
I am lost . . . I am helpless
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
II
I walk down the same street,
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
III
I walk down the same street
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in . . . it's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
V
I walk down another street.
"Be all that you can be." ~ U.S. Army
A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. "Who would like this $20 bill?" he asked. Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 bill to one of you, but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the money up. He then asked, "Who still wants it?" Still the hands went up.
"Well," he replied, "what if I do this?" and he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went up.
"My friends, you have all learned a valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel worthless. But no matter what has happened, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless."
~Cliff Anchor
"There is no person on this earth who exhibits more strength, courage, and dignity on a daily basis than an addict in recovery." ~ Unknown
