This is my first page about simple how to's, I'm not sure if the hazard switch repair, works on all years.

About the car of the month, I added the second part of the story. I hope to have it all in one page soon

Hazard switch repair

The hardest part about fixing this switch is, taking it apart you will need a dental pick or some sort of small pick, two would be better.

This repair is for the switches that do not stay depressed, your switch works to good in this case. The reason that I found for it not working, is a small arm inside the switch not catching (holding) the upper part of the switch were the bulb is. After you get the thing apart, take your time.

You will see the arm, on the lower part of the switch, on the upper half you will see a lot of brass looking stuff, well one of this little tabs makes contact. I found mine was little bent, but Im not sure if this is due to wear or it was designed like this, Im guessing that if your hazard light is working, then is correct. The arm on the lower part is what you need to fix. All you need to do is push the arm foward a VERY small amount, check it without the spring to see if it feels good you can clearly see if it catches and also if it realeases. If it does is fix.

Now is time to put it together, be very carefull with the spring and the plastic cup were it seats. It takes like 5 hands to get this to line up good, I put the button half in and then the cover. Make sure that you get everything lined up correctly, so you don't need to take it apart again. Test it several times, drink a beer or a starbucks. I have no idea how long the reapir lasts, but mine is 5 months old. You also saved 40.00 dollars.

Radio install

This is for all of you with modern radios. The factory installed a extra connector on the back of the hazard switch connector. First need to find the connector, it should be the only thing there, but just in case is the purple wire with the white tracer. This will give you 12v, but only with the ignition on.

Now you need to get a 12v source, to power your clock and preset stations. The only 12v source I found inside the car, is going to the cigarret lighter. To make this a clean installation, you need to remove the gauge cluster, very easy to do just reach under and disconnect first the speedometer cable, next the two round nuts, just reach with your hand you will feel them(don't loose the two rubber washers) last unplug a few connectors.

The wire you want is the red one with the yellow tracer(use a test light) with the ignition off, the test light will light up. Make a small splice and you are in business. The way I do it is, by stripping about 1/4 inch of insulation off, and then I take a regular brass connector, cut the end of, use the end to crimp the new wire on it looks pretty factory the some good quality electrical tape(3M) and some friction tape. Now you have a clean installation, that will be trouble free.

If anyone know of another, 12v source inside the car let me know.

Car Of the month

750 miles heading south

Our super hero stops at a one pump station, I don’t recall where. I paid and come out to fill my gas tank when I see that it has a locking gas cap, my other bimmers didn’t have it. Now the question is how do you open it, as I start to turn this thing in all kinds of directions and ways to no avail. I guess after 5 or so minutes the lady running the stations comes out to see what’s wrong, well I have to explain to her that I bought the car a few hours ago and no instruction on how to open the gas cap were given to me.

She goes inside and calls Igor (her son) to help, we open the trunk and look around for a mystery lever, but none there. Finally he says lets cut the rubber there and fill it up. I’m thinking now that’s a bad idea since I got hundreds of miles to go, gas splashing, sparks, the end result a fire. So I sat back for a minute and started to think like a German, and bam got it open. Got my gas and left.

Many hours later started to rain and gas was low again(I didn’t put enough last time), and I was hearing weird noise’s and the radio speakers didn’t work. So I stopped at some Denny’s to get some food, rest and wait out the rain a little oh yes and to get gas. Filled the gas tank up, started the drive again, got to L.A. from there on I new I was home free. Just drove all away home. My first test ride on the car 1,000 miles , I figured the warranty was all used up. The closer I got home the less weird the noises felt, they were the noises that my tii makes and only my tii

Over time I took care of all most of the noises, now it hums, purrs like a kitten. The car has never left me down, over three years now took it back up north to the 02 fest last year. I love it , no name yet. I hope I keep it for many years.
