This weekend we have been rocking out at V2002 in Chelmsford. Sam and Chris B left on Friday in the blistering heat to set up the tent and make a dent in the beer stash. We were then joined on saturday by Chris J and Clair who bought day tickets on the door. We later blagged them in for the whole weekend after making fake wrist bands out of Budweiser cardboard (good work Sam).
Saturday
The first band on the main stage was Ed Hardcourt who played a stunning set in the baking heat. Great tunes ("Hanging with the wrong crowd" especially) and topped off by setting alight to the keyboard and then smashing it to peices with a huge axe!!!! (thats entertainment). Next on were the Mull Historical Society and what a pile of crap they were!!!!!!! nuff said!!! Followed shortley by the legendary Bluetones who should have played more of their well known material but nice to see them writing new material.
We then moved the NME stage where Halo had just started. After lots of problems with kit and being told there was no effects Halo showed what real rock music was about with a storming set of heavy rock. Top band and a great sound.
Next it was time for the band we had been waiting all day for. My Vitriol took up the stage with a roar and created the first proper mosh pit of the day with "Losing Touch", "Cemented Shoes", "Grounded" etc. Still quite an unknown band but huge with us and the rest of their following every song burst with energy and a hunger to show people that they are a real band. They finished the amazing set with (anthem) "Always your way" / Alpha Waves" which caused mayhem especially when drummer Ravi threw his sticks into the srowd only to be caught by our drummer Chris (COME ON!!!!) Top Marks to My Vitriol!!
We then headed for the JJB arena for a must see Turin Brakes acoustic set. The heat in the tent was unbearable and a few people were passing out, the set was a blinder inluding "Underdog" and "72" they got the applause of the day and lots of respect.
It was time for the headliner on the main stage with Travis dropping out Chemical Brothers started the set well with "Block Rockin Beats" along with other well known tunes. Not really a headlining set but good never the less. After that back to the tent to polish off the rest of the beer and get smashed. Great day, great music!!!!
Sunday
Sunday was another blistering hot day with a bit of rain in the morning making it that bit more muggy. After a quick trip to Tescos for beer, cigerettes and a copy of the Sun we headed back for the first band we wanted to see, Kosheen. It was really refreshing to hear dance music/ drum 'n bass played by a whole band and I think everyone was really impressed.
Next up were The Counting Crows, American cheesy rock pop oldies. They got slated for a bad cover of Oasis' "Live Forever" not good.
Starsailor took up the stage to a huge roar and loads of appreciation. This was a stunning set with James Walsh's voice in top form, "Lullaby", "Poor Misguided Fool", "Fever", "Alcoholic" and a cover of Ben E King "Stand By Me" had the crowd including us in amasment. After a quick word about Noel Gallagher "Its nice to be good, but is is good to be nice" They finished a fantastic set with a pounding "Good Souls" and a quick crowd dive to a huge applause. 10/10
Gomez started slowley but soon warmed up to show that they have still got it. After about 8 well played songs to a roar from the crowd they played "Whipping Picadilly". Good set but could have played more off Bring it On.
Finally it had come to Chris Bs moment when one of his favorite bands Primal Scream strolled on the stage as the sun was just fading. They opened with a storming "Accelerator" followed by new track "Miss Lucifer". A great Live version of "Kowolski" and "Swastica Eyes" It was a shame that most people were chilling out before the headliner because it was a belting set which deserved more respect. It was finished and topped off with Screamadelica track "Moving on up" to a fantastic lighting show and much more crowd appreciation. Amazing Amazing Amazing what more can I say for the Scream!!!!!
