Ms. Crocker

English I

SYLLABUS

9th grade English is the beginning of your high school English experience.  It is a chance for you to acquire the skills to communicate effectively and to gain an understanding of the various genres of literature.  It is my hope that through understanding you will develop an appreciation for literature and maybe even a love for it!

Our emphasis will be on reading and comprehension as well as the development of writing skills.  We will use the green text books as well as incorporate outside sources such as periodical, novels, and the Internet.

A reminder about grading:

Tests-20%

Quizzes-20%

Classwork/Participation-20%

Homework-20%

Essays-20%

The rationale behind these percentages is that everyone has certain areas where they are strongest and weakest.  Some people are great at taking tests while others are great at writing essays.  By giving equal weight to each area, no one will be too harshly penalized for areas that are more difficult for them.

*quizzes will be both announced and unannounced
