Building Integrity and Character
As part of the Integrity and Character Theme, you are required
to participate in a community service project that gives you a hands-on,
rewarding experience. We are asking that you take on a project that you
have never done before, or expand on a project that you have. Be creative
in your ideas and pursuits.
Ideas:
- Adopt
a daycare center for low-income families
- Adopt
a family
- Be a
Big Brother or Big Sister
- Collect
and deliver needed items to local charities
- Establish
a mentor program at our high school
- Have a
Christmas-in-April event and remodel a home
- Hold a
paint-a-thon
- Hold
an auction or yard sale to raise money for a local charity or non-profit
organization
- Support
a community center by painting, helping with minor maintenance, furniture
moving, and cleaning up
- Tutor
at a local elementary school
- Prepare
and serve meals (minimum 2) at a local soup kitchen
- Work
with a local food bank to collect and distribute food
- Respond
to an issue in the news with a “Write Your Local Congressman” campaign
- Sponsor
an meaningful environmental cleanup project (not just picking up trash on
the beach)
Other avenues:
- Contact
local service organizations like Rotary, Kiwanis, the City Government,
CRPD, Fire Department, etc.
- Look
on-line under “community service project ideas” for ideas
Responsibilities & Guidelines:
- Submit
a proposal outlining the nature of the project, the number of hours it
will require, the expected outcome and a timeline of events.
- If
you opt to take part in an already planned activity, such as a Habitat for
Humanity build. You will not
need to spend as much time on building a proposal. Instead you will conduct research
on the impact of your service activities on the community.
- Spend
between 6-7 hours on the project, which must be completed by Monday,
February 26th, 2007. All
service must be completed with at least one other group member present.
- You
may not miss any school time to complete your service project.
- Create
a Power Point presentation with pictures and stories of how your project
builds integrity and character.
You have the option of creating a professional video documentary
instead of a PPT. Computer Lab time will be given on Monday,
February 26th.
- Present
your experience to the class on Tuesday, February 27th.
