Notes from the Tightrope Tap Dancers

When you started this game
You were on top
Of the world, of his shoulders
Tap dancing along his bones
While he stood there silent
While I only saw the beauty
Of your dance
And his pose

But did we look down
To see the Fates'
Thread he stood upon?
And did we hear laughter?
They're at it again
'Cause you're both fun to torment
So to them it's a joke
Or worse just a game

And now that he's slipping
And now that you're falling
You see tides are turning
You've tapped through his flesh
So he's thrown you off balance

So you are in his dance
Of twisting and falling
For now you're both floating
But the floor's rising
And soon you will crash

But if you had noticed
The pain you were causing
The blood on your shoes
The blood from his shoulders
Through his blue and gray t-shirt
White soles on red pain

And if he had cried out
Said he could not hold you
You could have dismounted
Balanced the thread
Cursed the Fates

But instead he is bleeding
Still he laughs softly
For you fall faster
He'll see you crash
Just before him

The Fates will be dancing
They'll win at their game
For you will both tumble
Lie dormant and broken
Until they turn their gaze again

And then you'll take me
Dance on my back
As I bend over
To piece him back together
You don't think I'll slip

back to the highway that never ends
