Paranoia

While walking down a bustling street
Do you ever get those feelings
That those around you are all ganged up,
All planning dirty dealings?

Do you often find yourself
Looking over your own shoulder
Positive that the human race
Is growing harsher, and much colder?

Have you ever smiled at someone
While walking ‘round the block
And if they smile back at you,
You submit to fear, go into shock?

Do you really know what your own fears are?
Could you describe them all to me?
Or do you just feel overwhelmed,
And sure that of them you will never be free?

Can you sit in a room alone
Yet comfortable, with your back to the door?
Or do you always listen closely
For a squeak of hinge, a creak of floor?

And if you do fear as I do
Perhaps you’ll try to tell me
Just what it is that I so fear
And why it tries to fell me

And now that we’ve confessed our fears
And know that of a kind, we’re two
I’ll smile at you on the street –
And then I’ll be afraid of you

back to the highway that never ends
