The Shadow Syndicate has existed within Arseneth for as long as most people can remember – and probably a good deal longer. They deal in matters not entirely legal and those quite clearly illegal – gambling, smuggling, blackmail, kidnaping, and theft.The Syndicate’s reputation is one of extreme skill and competence. They are not feared so much as they are afforded the respect they have earned. Many people would refer to the Syndicate as a thieves’ guild, but it is actually a far more extensive organization than that. The Syndicate operates a bewildering array of businesses, shipping companies, and thieves’ guilds, and with enough secrecy that even the higher-ups in their various fronts do not know where their funding comes from. More astute individuals may have their suspicions, but few concrete ties exist to directly link the Syndicate to its various fronts.
The Syndicate typically does not participate in overly violent activities, such as murder, for the Syndicate leadership has long maintained that if you kill your clientele, they cease to make money (and if they don’t have money, the Syndicate cannot make money). When threatened with a situation that requires a strong arm, however, the guild is more than capable of dealing with the situation, whether doing so requires back-room legbreaking or very public, high-profile assassinations.
