"Isis and Osiris were an actual king and queen of Egypt. Their mortal names were Akasha and Enkil. There was a tribe of priests who were seers for the king and queen. The two we're concerned with were twin sisters, named Mekare and Maharet. Akasha consulted them and wanted their power for her own. Akasha then tried to kill them, and the demons/gods they served swarmed in and inhabited their rent bodies. Since these demons/gods entered through the blood, they have to have blood to continue to live. Hence Mekare and Maharet were the first vampires. They bit Akasha and she drank from them, becoming a vampire herself, and she blinded Maharet and tore out Mekare's tongue. Then she bit Enkil and they begat the line of modern vampires.
"Through the centuries, Maharet became the Mother, the Keeper of all vampiric lore and tradition. Mekare went mad and haunted the jungles of Africa. Because the "infection" (vampirism) is passed by the co-mingling of blood, if you're a new vampire, and the vampire who made you is destroyed, you'll be destroyed too. This is how Lestat and Akasha destroyed most of the vampires of the world in Queen of the Damned. Lestat had drunk from Akasha, so he's nearly invincible. At the end of Queen of the Damned, Maharet and Mekare are reunited and they kill Akasha and eat her heart. Mekare goes back to being feral (not my Tribe, but used here as an adjective), and Maharet continues as the true "queen." She has to take human eyes every few hundred years or so in order to see."
For the purposes of my story, I now add to this...
The Rey also call themselves "Children of Lestat." They regard him as the "king" of their Tribe, and have inherited his desire for finer things and high society. The first sect of the Rey Tribe were all created by Lestat himself, and they both procreated and "infected" humans to increase their size. However, they only turn a human if they seem to be Rey by nature, or if it can be proven they have ancestral Rey blood. They usually own large companies and businesses, and often make national headlines. When one hears of "East Coast High Society" or "Southern Debutant Balls," one can be quite sure there'll be a Rey or two (or three... or 10... or more...) lurking about.
The Scholars have a similar relationship to Maharet, as she is the Keeper of knowledge, however she was not their creator. To continue the family metaphor, they are like her adopted children. They began as simply a group of vampires whose main goal was to find their Queen and learn what she knows. They think too little of humans to ever make them vampires, so their numbers rely soley on procreation. However, it is a cold and empty process of necessity, never inspired by emotions or hormones. It is not known how many Scholars there are, as they tend to be secretive and absorbed in their studies. They value reading above all other forms of learning, as a tribute to their Queen's "eye condition."
Obviously, the Feral are from Makare. She was the first of their Tribe, and the Tribe itself began with her biological children, many of them twisted half-animal creatures. As time progressed the Feral fed on both humans and wild animals, and turned both types of creatures. In recent years they have limited themselves to humans, and have no restrictions on what type of humans they "infect." But for the most part, the Feral Tribe is furthered by lusty procreation. They are by far the largest Tribe. Makare, having lost her tongue, was unable to comminucate coherently (by most standards) but she did the best that she could, and this developed into a new language that only the Feral tribe can decipher.
The Tuned claim to orginate with the biological children of Akasha and Enkil, who were turned by their mother, but this has yet to be substantiated. Since they tend to be completely chaste, they have little choice but to turn humans. They would much rather "convert" other vampires to their ways, but for the most part that is a futile effort. As they are artists, musicians, and other creative types by nature, they are more prominant in human society than almost any of the other Tribes, save for the suave buisiness types of the Rey. Many famous galleries and musuems already feature the work of the Tuned.
The final Tribe, the Superstitione, don't claim any origin other than Divine, and say that all life comes to be in that manner. They generally only feed from and turn humans who are strong and wise in their own faith. Of course, once they become vampires they are converted to the Tribes beliefs, but never forcefully. They are not turned unless it is clear that they will accept the Superstitione's belief system. They are the only Tribe to live in human family type scenarios, as they value that kind of closeness. Their beliefs are passed to their biological children as well as newly "infected" vampires.
