The History of Shepherds' Pie

By Sir Galwyn

Shepherds Pie, comes from the highlands of Scotland, where sheep and potatos are plentiful! And it was a little bit different from the recipe I use....in the original form, lamb chunks are used instead of the ground meat mix. The lamb chunks were marinated in brandy and seasonings, and then braised in au jus gravy.

It was inexpensive and easy to make. It was inexpensive, mainly because, as I mentioned before, because there were alot of Sheepherders so the meat was readily available, and potatos were raised as well.

The wives of the Herders, made the "meat pie" with mashed potatos as the crust, which lined the pan then the lamb and gravy mix was placed as the filling, and topped with more potatos as the top crust and baked.

The recipe was changed as the cost of lamb increased and the availability wasn't always good. Somewhere along the line someone decided to add corn....some people use other vegetables, it really doesn't matter (as long as it isnt a really wet veggie!)

So if you want authentic Shepherds pie, use lamb chunks!!!
