Wednesday 18.2.04 | FINALLY got round to going and seeing The Return of the King which, predictably, is excellent, but also a bit of a marathon. Will be at least a few months before I see it again. Had various problems with it, namely: I realised I needed the loo 20 minutes in, and sat tightly cross-legged for the next three hours I started to think that the film's language began to take the piss out of itself after two hours; after all the Mordor is fallens and Go, Erewen, King of all Rohans I was desperate for someone to say Can it wait a minute? Just spilt bloody elf-juice all down my top I realised there were tears in my eyes near the end: I do not cry in films I didn't have a clue what was going on half the time, but that didn't stop my enjoyment of the individual scenes So rah :-) Friday 20.2.04 WENT to see World Music last night at the Donmar Warehouse which, while depressing and sometimes unpleasant, was also very good - all about the European representations of African genocides. Worth seeing if you get the chance... Sunday 22.2.04 MMMM, have clearly had a very cultural week - got the DVD of 'The Magdalene Sisters' out last night. It's a difficult film to 'like' because it's so horrific, but it's got a profound point to make. Apparently, the Catholic Church (understandably) didn't want it released, which I suppose is fair enough: Hollywood has a history of demonising the papal minions, but I'm assure that this particular film is true to life. Indeed, some people claim that, in comparison to what really happened in those laundries, this is Disney... | ||
