Safe Sex in Fiction
So what is this page about? It was started on World AIDS Day as a way to educate and unite the fiction community on the internet. There is a strong trend in fictional stories to involve unprotected sex scenes, especially in the fan fiction slash community (gay sex stories about celebrities). You may say "Who cares? It's only fiction!" True, but fiction can also set an example. A large number of people reading fiction on the internet are young, and studies show there has been a drastic rise in unprotected sex among teens and people in their 20s. Right now the percent of people having unprotected sex mirrors the amount that were doing it in the 80s when AIDs was still a rarely known disease. As of December, 2000, 20% of the United Sates population between the ages 25 and 29 had been diagnosed with HIV, and 13% between age 20 and 24. As of December 2000, 140,423 people between the ages of 15 and 34 have died of AIDs in the United States alone.
This site is not advocating that a condom be used no matter what, even if it detracts from the story line. But if there is an opportunity for safe sex, why not use it? If two lovers end up in the bedroom, why not take two seconds to grab one out of the nightstand? Or for other scenarios why not have someone pull one out of their wallet or purse?
Having unprotected sex in a fiction isn't a horrible, evil thing. That is not the message this page is trying to get across. But safe sex in a fiction can set a good example and be a friendly reminder for real life behavior. As fiction writers we can do our part to help in the fight against AIDs by having our fictional characters support the safe sex movement.
