Milton; his son John inherited Udston, and his
great-great-great-grandson, William Hamilton, claimed the Belhaven title as
heir male and in 1790 voted in the election for representative peers, but his
right to the title was denied in 1793, as under Scots law, in cases of
“heirs male”, the descendants of younger brothers took precedence
over descendants of older brothers
