HAMILTON & BRANDON

The present members of this family bear the surname Douglas-Hamilton. The children of the Dukes of Hamilton, the sisters of the 13th Duke of Hamilton, and the daughters of the Earls of Selkirk bear the title Lord/Lady before their Christian names. The sons of the Earls of Selkirk bear the prefix "Honourable" before their Christian names.

ANNE Hamilton, 3^rd Duchess of Hamilton (d.Hamilton 17 Oct 1716); m.29 Apr 1656 William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk, cr 1660 Duke of Hamilton, etc. (24 Dec 1634-18 Apr 1694); in 1688 he resigned the Earldom of Selkirk, which was re-granted to his younger sons, respectively, in tail male, failing whom to the heirs male of the Duke of Hamilton, provided that if any succeeded to the Dukedom of Hamilton, then the Selkirk title would devolve his next brother [but if he had no brother, it would devolve at his death on his second son]; their issue took the surname Hamilton
