It is always a girl and each has their own Watcher. The job of a Watcher is to train their Slayer, mentor and prepare her for the evil ahead. The Watcher is not allowed to get attached to their Slayer as they must be willing to send her to her death if it is nessesary. Watchers are trainer by the Watchers council in England who give the main orders of the Slayer.

To protect people the Slayer must not tell anyone of her duty, which should be her number one priority in life.

The Watchers council were late in finding Buffy when the previous Slayer died and she had already settled into a normal life at high school. At 15 Buffy was not at all interested in being the Slayer although she did accept her duty but had to move to Sunnydale when she was expelled from Hemery High for burning down teh gym. The show is not just about a teenaged, blonde fighting with monsters. The show uses the physical monsters as a metaphor for the personal demons people have to fight within themselves everyday.
