The cortege of the Royal Family through Amsterdam preceding the one of HRH Princess Beatrix and her fiancé Mr. Claus von Amsberg. Several carriages of the royal collection carried HM Queen Juliana and HRH Prince Bernhard together with Mrs. Von Amsberg, as well as Princess Irene with her husband and Princess Margriet with her own fiancé, Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven. The image depicts all the festive mood of Amsterdam that day, with thousands of Dutch and Orange flags and banners.

The magnificent and historic Glass Coach, last used for this wedding procession, carried HM Queen Juliana, HRH Prince Bernhard and Mrs. Von Amsberg from the Royal Palace of the Dam to the Town Hall and then to the Westerkerk, where the religious ceremony of the wedding was held.

The spectacular Golden State Coach, a present of the city of Amsterdam to Princess Wilhelmina, had been used at the wedding of HRH Princess Beatrix’s mother, HM Queen Juliana, to Prince Bernhard of Lippe Biesterfeld in The Hague. It was the obvious choice of carriage for the grand cortege through Amsterdam, allowing the wedding to seem part of a dream, with the picturesque scenes of a slow move of the coach through the city.
