PAYU aims at expanding the use of computers and Internet in African countries in an affordable and sustainable way. We have developed a technology platform that provides computers with a wireless Internet connection together with an array of locally hosted software packages. The use of thin Clients and wireless mesh distribution makes our solution cheap and scalable. We offer a choice between two payment plans: the familiar pay-as-you-go or monthly subscriptions. We are looking to create a sustainable, profit-oriented computing solution that will encourage uninitiated clients to exploit the power of computers.

What we have done so far

In January 2009 we conducted a pilot of the PAYU system in Kigali. This pilot was done in collaboration with the Office of the President and the Rwanda Information Technology Authority. The response from the Rwandan government and test users towards our technology was very positive.

We setup five computers at coffee shop in Kigali; these computers were available for use by customers at the café by obtaining vouchers from the staff. We observed that customers enjoyed the fast Internet speeds and the convenience of going online while they waited for their order. We also set up 5 computers at a high school near Kigali. This setup tested our system in conditions of regular power outages and poor Internet connectivity. We surveyed our users to get feedback that we incorporated to further improve the system.
