Many people can say they love God and follow Him, and serve Him, but talk only goes as far as one's lips. Acting it out is completely different. The Bible says this:
Mark 7:6 says: "And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.' "
One thing to remember, is that man can never be perfect, nowhere near as perfect as God. Man makes mistakes, some are stronger in their faith than others, so they can hold and be a stronger example for God. Hypocrites exist everywhere, and there are those who preach of God and will turn around and walk a different direction than they tell. That is not of God's doing, that is just in the weakness of human hearts.
As for the mistakes people made, that again is purely due to the human nature to make mistakes and be imperfect. We are all made in God's image, but we were not endowed with perfection, for if we were, we would have no need for God; thus, no need for our creator. And as Jesus said, "No servant is greater than his master." Servant not actually meaning we are slaves, just meaning we serve the Lord.
There is also quite a difference between religion and serving God. Religion was made by man to acquire control and freedom, and meaning in and on life. A relationship with God, as Jesus preached, however, takes nothing more than faith, and believing that Jesus was the messiah.
So, basically, do not base your idea of God on the heart of a hypocrite, but on the love of God Himself, and the virtue of His Son, Jesus.
