The Beaton Generation

Radio 4
1998 (twelve programmes)

This punningly-titled series was hosted by Alistair Beaton (though whether its listeners would have been sufficiently appraised of the work of The The to understand the reference, is hard to say) and broadcast live from the elgendary Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London.  Each programme was 45 minutes long and included broadly topical and satirical material from various regular performers, plus special guest comedians each week.  The series began in the week of the infamous Changes of 1998 and, of the various formats for satire tried out around that time, was probably the only serious contender to become a replacement for Week Ending with a permanent slot in the schedules.  At the time of writing, though, only one twelve-week run has been broadcast.
