Twenty Players

Radio 4
Series One 1995 (six programmes)
Series Two 1997 (six programmes)

Cunningly-titled quarter-hour Late Night Opening show inspired by the potted profiles of sporting heroes commonly found on cigarette cards, in the days when such things existed.  Each episode was narrated by a different well-known sports personality or pundit, and told the life story of a highly unusual (and totally fictitious) figure from their own field.  The narrative was interspersed with supposed quotes from those who knew the sports star in question — actually bits of old interview material presented out of context in the On The Hour style.  Panel-game scriptwriter Simon Bullivant was the author of this series, which at the time of writing hasn’t quite made it to the full Twenty Players, stopping off at number twelve.
