"Taylor, I'm going to be fine, just relax!" Shirley said, trying to calm her hysterical boyfriend down.
"Oh, Shir, I was so scared when the hospital called. I didn't know what happened. I'm just glad you're okay."
"Yes, I'm fine. Just a broken bone. Nothing major."
Shirley had been driving home from a meeting that night during a snowstorm, and her car had swerved off the road, causing her to scrape her arm, and badly sprain her wrist.
"Well, I'm not leaving your side until you're better."
"Taylor, it's just my wrist, I'll be fine!"
"No, no excuses. You're staying at my house. I don't want you falling."
"Well…" Shirley thought about this. Staying with Taylor. He could be terribly awful, sometimes obsessing over everything, but sometimes, he could also be caring and romantic. She decided to take her chances and relented.
"Okay, but only for a few days."
She sighed as the doctor came in.
"You got lucky." The woman said with a smile. "The sprain was bad, but it's not broken. If you refrain from using it a lot, it should be better in two to three weeks." She said. "It could have been much worse."
Shirley smiled weakly from her seat. "I know."
"Alright, we've been over everything previously, so I'm going to release you. I want to see you in a week, so I can keep a close watch on it."
"You ready to go?" he asked her.
"Yeah, I want to get out of here." She said, adjusting her arm.
A nurse entered the room to see if Shirley had any questions.
"No, I don't have a job that requires me to use it a lot." Shirley answered.
"That's good. It will heal a lot faster if you don't use it." She said with a smile.
"Good." Shirley said, returning the smile.
"Will it hurt much longer?" Taylor asked.
"It should be sore, but no, it wont' really hurt if she doesn't use it." The nurse answered.
"Will it be really uncomfortable?" He asked.
"A little, yes." The nurse smiled at Taylor.
"Can we get her any drugs to help the pain?" Taylor questioned.
The nurse laughed. "The doctor prescribed some painkillers for her. You can pick them up as soon as you leave." She said.
"Okay...we'll get them right away, okay honey?" He asked, patting Shirley's hand.
"Okay. Ouch! That's my bad arm." She winced as he patted the hand of her sprained wrist.
"Oh my gosh! I'm sorry! I totally forgot. I'm so sorry. Does it hurt?"
Shirley laughed at her boyfriend. "it's okay." She said.
"You've got such a sweet husband." The nurse said, nodding towards Taylor.
"Oh, we're not married." Shirley said.
"Oh, sorry. You look like you should be." The nurse said with a smile.
Taylor simply smiled and handed Shirley her coat and mittens.
