"Mom, tell Zac i'm gonna be right back, I think I have one of Wendy's cats." Isaac said a few days later to his mother. It was around six in the evening, and he had just found a little kitten wandering around their front yard. He had seen her that morning in the yard with five or six kittens, so this one had to be hers.
"Now where are you going?" Diana asked, poking her head out of the laundry room.
"I'm going over to Wendy's."
"oh you are?"
"Don't start." Isaac said with a grin, opening the door.
"Wait a sec." Zac said.
"What?"
"I thought we were going to the studio to write some new stuff.
"We are, but first i have to take back Wendy's cat."
"Alright." Zac said with a sigh.
"I won't be gone long."
"Okay." Zac said, retreating to the kitchen.
"I'll be back. Bye." Isaac said, slamming the door beind him.
He went into the garage and picked up the kitten from the cardboard box he stored it in. "You're too small to be crossing the street." He said to it, holding it next to his chest. He winced as the kittens sharp little claws dug into him.
"Ow." He said, looking to cross the street.
He walked up Wendy's steps, then up to her door. He rang the doorbell, and a few seconds later, Wendy opened the door.
"Well hi, Isaac, come on in." She said.
"Oh, well i found this cat, and i was jus wondering if it was yours?" he asked.
"Oh Mousy!" She said. "Well bless his little heart, this one always wanders around."
She reached over to take him from Isaac. The kitten held onto him with is claws. Isaac inhaled sharply.
"Oh, he's got sharp little things, doesn't he?" She asked. She gently detached his claws from Isaac's shirt, then put him down at the top of the steps to join his siblings.
"They're so much fun." She said.
"yeah."
"I just love kittens." She said, shoving her hands into the pockets of her cut-off jean shorts.
"Yeah, we have three cats too." Isaac said, desperately trying to make conversation."
"Aw." She said. "Hey Isaac?"
"Yeah?"
"I have a job to do, that i just can't seem to get, excuse me." She said, walking past him and out onto the front porch.
"I've been trying to hang this swing, but i only have one stool, and i'm just not tall enough. "
"Okay."
"You've got to be over six feet tall..."
"I'm six four." he said with a smile.
"Oh my. Well anyway, i was wondering if you'd hang this swing for me?"
Isaac saw a white porch swing sitting on the corner of the porch. "Sure." He said, picking it up.
"I have the hooks already." She said. "They were already there."
"No problem. " He said, reaching up to hook the chain onto the hook.
When he was finished, she smiled brightly. "Thank you." She said.
"Happy to help." he replied, smiling back at her.
"You're such a sweetheart." She said.
Isaac felt himself blush.
"i was just fixing some lemonade, would you like some?" She asked.
"Well, i should get back...." He trailed off. She smiled at him. "I could have a glass, i'm sure it wouldn't hurt." He finished.
"Okay, i'll go get it." She said. Wendy turned and went into the house. She came back out.
"Are you sure i don't know you from anywhere?" She asked.
"I dont' think so." he replied.
"I swear we've met. Or at least i've seen you." She said.
"Nope."
She set down the tray of lemonade on a stool next to the swing.
"We can sit here on my new swing and drink our lemonade." She said, pouring two glasses.
"Yup." Isaac said, sitting down on the swing.
She handed him a glass, then sat down beside him. Isaac could feel her leg on his jeans, and he thanked God silently that it was a small swing.
"So what do you do for a living, Isaac?"
Isaac nearly choked on his lemonade. "Uh...i'm a...musician." He answered.
"Oh." She said. "Do you play in band or make records, or what?" She asked.
"Oh...All of the above." he said, silently getting a kick out of the whole conversation.
"Oh, that's neat." She said. "I'll have to come see you play."
"Yeah, you sure will." He said, looking over at her and smiling. This was going to be fun.
